I've said this many times that one of the best Casting reels ever made (they fluked this reel's balance) is the little Saltist 30H, or new model BG30H. Fishing for edibles, this reel is hard to beat. Pair it with a good Medium rated (4-6oz) 14 ft HMG Rod (eg: Assassin Med HMG, Pentagon Medium Hmg - both Blue Marlin blanks), and you will have a combination that is hard to beat for pure, trouble free, fishing pleasure.
Hi Tony and the other surf casting gurus - would you say that the Saltist 30 is still the reel to beat in this class?

No guru, but here's my 2c.
I think the passive Mag kits has narrowed the gap in this class of reel. A magged Penn Fathom 30 is as good as the little Saltist 30H. Basically if you mag any reel in this size range properly, you will have a good experience.

Thanks - it seems that magging is a no brainer. Is there anyone on the forum offering this service or is it a(n easy) DIY operation?

:Like: all my multipliers are static magged , makes a huge difference , can fish at night with them and still give it horns in the cast without  having to worry about overwinds + on a steep beach if you cant get enough drop on the line when casting and have to use a short drop , no problem at all still goes off smoothly even jerking it through .

Great thread.
I am battling with multipliers , even the little Abu BlackMax i bought whilst working in Aruba. Got so frustrated with myself that I ended up fishing off a pier with the kids  just lobbing a bread bait and some prawn and catching all the Juvvies and releasing them.

A few cold beers and watching the sun set feeling the 'tap tap tap' was awesome, now I have to learn to cast again.

Not a reel issue, but a real issue. The real issue being me

So frustrated.

I am the official fitter for Mag-It in JHB.
What reel do you have - will see if I have a kit in stock.
