Joining a Windon leader with a Standard CatsPaw knot
« on: April 29, 2012, 03:25:49 PM »
Here follows an alternative method of joining a Windon Leader to your mainline. This method uses the Standard CatsPaw knot.
Personally I prefer using the Modified CatsPaw Knot, as it is easier to do and just as strong.

But for those who prefer conventional knots, this is an alternative that works.

This method, like the Modified CatsPaw, allows you to keep your Windon wrapped up without having to thread all 9m of it each time you pass it through the loop.

You need to tie a Bimini in the Mainline to form a loop that is bigger than the Wind-on wrapped up.

There has been some speculation that the Modified CatsPaw is not as strong as the Standard CatsPaw. I tested this for myself:

Both knots work perfectly well. The Modified CatsPaw is easier to do and is more streamlined than the Standard CatsPaw.

thanks Very nice. Last week I still joined the leader to line using the Modified CatsPaw as this was the joint that I trusted. I will definately look at this . But as you say the Modified CatsPaw does not fail.

What did they all have in common, they all used the Modified Catspaw, I had also been using it after testing it myself but seeing these losses where after long periods of Sustained pressure (The Mazeppa ones) had swayed my confidence.

Interesting observations Craig. Thanks.
