FG Knot

I tried the FG for the first time today,as I'm going to do some work in Mosselbay and rods are going with obviously...so on my spinning setups I needed/wanted to try this knot from braid mainline-braid leader and from braid leader to +- 70cm fluoro leader...doing it at first with the braid leader was quite a faf,battling to bite the mainline tag,plus the braid leader is limp... so after a few failed attempts I got a little and noticed my half empty plastic water bottle... so unscrewed the cap,wound the tag around the top and screwed on the cap 'till there was enough tension so that the braid don't slip,then hung the bottle off the edge of the counter...worked a charm... I thought afterwards that a vicegrip could do the same thing if it could grip the braid...


p.s.:Both FG's look good,and are strong,the fluoro one is actually a little see-through

Guys I agree with Gerhard's comment earlier in the thread - I'll go with an FG on my casting / spinning outfits up to 50lb braid but for jigging and heavier braid I still stick with the PR knot.


One thing I'll advise is to consider switching from the half-hitch style of finishing on the FG and rather go to the Rizutto finish as shown in this clip - it's easier to finish the knot and mechanically stronger. I've been using the Rizutto finish for a while know on both my PR knots and FG's and it's been great, just my 2c to consider:

Agree with all of this.  With the Rizutto being a forward finished knot (tension applied towards leader) it is not self-tightening.  Keep that in mind if you intend to cast it through guides on long leaders.  I always have two alternating locking half hitches before finishing.  For PR or FG knots going through guides, I moved back to the finishing off with alternating half hitches.

Tried the Rizutto finish a few times and it's always unraveled... After a while there is a 10mm tag end blowing round in the wind. And that's without ever casting the knot through the guides. I normally just finish as usual with back to back half hitches but I have considered getting some Knot Sense and trying that.

The UV Knot Sense is a great product. I usually finish all my knots with that or just 2 coats of clear nail varnish for extra protection

Cool... I think I'll get some. I'd be a tad nervous of nail varnish without researching what the solvent (carrier) is and it's possible effect on lines. Nail varnish remover is usually acetone with some things to lower it's volatility and make it smell nice for girls... and acetone is quite harsh stuff when it comes to many plastics. Maybe you've checked it out already Bwana?


Other issue here would be to only use "glue" on the termination of the knot (rizutto or half hitches) and not on the finger cuff section of the knot. That has to be able to move in order to bite down on the mono. With Knot Sense, I thik I may be more inclined to end with the Rizutto wrap.

FG stands for Fine Grip. Fine grip knot.

Thanks Reefs, I was reading an article about variations to knots and guys were asking if they submitted their variation "would the knot be named after them ".
