John F's DIY: Dredge bar
« on: May 05, 2014, 09:43:00 AM »
Dredge bars have been around for a few years and are very popular in the USA. These can be used with plastics or baits and are very effective teasers for both game- and billfish.

Here's one I've recently completed. I used two fiberglass tent-poles secured by iron putty. A stainless steel wire runs in the middle and serves as the attaching point for the towing cord and weight and also for the fifth chain.

I'll be using daisy chains of squid but the design can easily accommodate rigged dead baits (mullets or halfbeaks). Was also thinking that those plastic rulers used as teasers (see Bwana's teaser http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php?topic=13781.0) would also work.

Other teasers I'll also use are those lumo paddle tails used for dropshot. On clouded days I'm sure these will do some magic.

Will primarily use it when targeting gamefish and sailies.

Here's an updated pic of the dredge bar. I made a 2nd one for extra volume. Will use a combination of artificial (paddletails) and natural baits (halfbeaks). None of the baits will have hooks on.

These dredges will be pulled at a low angle from a small s\s teaser boom I made. A 26 Oz weight will be attached at the front to keep the dredges submerged.

The idea is to simulate a baitfish ball and have a hooked halfbeaks or a lure swimming behind (3-4 m).

Testing this tomorrow... Watch this space...

Tested it today. Success!

The weights work perfectly and the dredges ride 50 to 70 cm cm below the surface at 5 knots, 7 m behind the boat. I'm sure at 10 m it will go down a bit deeper...

Really excited about this!
