Hi Bennie
It's easy as
1. Clean the rod tube with thinners
2. Spray it with plastic primer (Rust-oleum) Price is heavy for the primer!
3. Spray your color of your liking.

4. Add your name (Sticker).
5. Spray the final coat with clear lacquer.
and there it is all done.

Kp... the guys normally use the straightfoward PVC Plumbing pipes. Tackle stores cover them with material and zippers. I think you can buy lids that screw on top of the pipe to seal them off.

Question for Milo Man or anyone who thinks out the box... done my new customized toilet pipe rod tube... whats the best way of putting a carrying strap/handle on? Don't want to put rivets through as they might scratch the rods on the inside? Maybe glue velcro straps on?? Any thoughts?

Reefz, what diameter pipes did you get and where? Here Builders Warehouse only sell the wide (sanitary) and smaller diameter (run-off) types, and what do you use for caps/ends?
Title: Re: Rod Tubes
Post by: REEFMAN on June 15, 2011, 06:12:57 PM
I used the big ones... must be 10-12cm in diameter? Builders Whouse... have end pieces that you glue on with a screwtop cap.

I should be able to get a Blade and a Medium Assassin in at the same time...

Reefz, you could wrap whatever straps (fabric, SS, etc) with old fishing line... it takes a while but it's very strong...

My experience has been that Velcro collects sand over time, but the edhesive type sticks like crazy.

Alternatively one could pop rivet the straps to a section of pipe off-cut using small stainless steel pop rivets and then glue that section onto the pipe with PVC Weld. Small holes would probable have to be made in the pipe to accomodate the sharp heads of the rivets which should not protrude on the inside of the pipe. One would probably also need to use small pop rivet washers to prevent the "head side" of the pop rivet from pulling through the PVC when tighting the rivet.
Title: Re: Rod Tubes
Post by: SAfish on June 16, 2011, 08:59:28 AM
Would it not be better to create a thickening at the end of the strap or a loop and then take the off cut over that and glue it on the pipe with PVC weld?  :dunno:
I will do a test run tonight and see if it will work.

You are right, and another option: push the off-cut through a loop in the end of the strap  and then glue the off-cut to the pipe.

That is the idea and PVC weld will hold it there forever!

Will PVC weld stick a nylon type strap nicely? Must try it out on some offcut pipes...
Title: Re: Rod Tubes
Post by: PH on June 16, 2011, 05:45:32 PM
Reefz, The nylon trap does not have to the adhere to the the PVC at all (it won't)

Stitch a loop at the end of the nylon strap. Insert the the PVC pipe off-cut through the loop. The off-cut must be longer than the width of the strap.
Glue both ends of the PVC off-cut either side of the strap to the pipe with PVC weld.
Repeat at other end of strap.

:-( No public holidays for the rest of the year for me.  :-(
The guys at my work thought it would be a good idea if we take the whole week off between the Easter weekends. We had to trade in our other holidays. I complained and refused to sign the memo but majority ruled and we took the week off. The weather that week was the $&^&*% so far for the winter. Today they were all long faced because they had to work but I just gave them the "I told you so" laugh. It was not all bad and I got a lot of work done!  :hehe:

Ok here's my new bling bling  :ult: rod tube!!

Got some 20cm Plumbing pipe... cleaned it with Thinners. Spray Painted it with a few coats of Rustoleum "Hammered paint for plastic" - no primer necessary. Gave it a gun metal finish. Then I got some vinyls made, stuck them on and woopie doo!

If anyone needs beautiful Vinyl stickers made for any purpose... cars, windows etc... I can readily recommend ET on this site... it's what he does professionally. Koos' vinyl's that he made are absolutely brilliant!! Thanks Koos!

Used some spare strapping and rivetted a carry handle on, making sure the rivets were short enough not to protrude too far into the tube...

Title: Re: Rod Tubes
Post by: Half-Pint on August 09, 2011, 09:36:48 AM
Almost exactly the same as yours. Cleaned everything with thinners sprayed a couple of coats of grey onto the tube and sprayed the end caps red patience is a virtue here if you don't let it dry it will run. Then on the tube I sprayed the tips red and let it sort of fade down to the grey. Then I put some pvc weld onto the screw adaptors and pushed them down onto the tube. Let that dry for the day. I also added one of the clear UA stickers which looks really great almost like the words of been sprayed onto the tube not stuck on. Finally once everything was dry I sprayed a few coats of clear lacquer on to it all. I hope its not going to scratch easily because I didn't use the fancy rustoleum paint. I figured for this small tube I'd experiment with the cheaper paints if it works then great if not well lesson learnt

Awesome tube, Half-Pint!  (clap) + cred
Mine is assembled and only needs a nice coat of paint. I am also worried about scratching  :-( My tube is 2.1m long and it is a bit bulky but I can fit my 14ft Beach Master, Exage 110H and my 7ft one piece light tackle rod in it. I just hope they don't give my flack at the airport because of the length.  :dunno:
Title: Re: Rod Tubes

Herman I doubt they will I used to fly to durban quite a lot a few years ago and always took almost exactly the same setup as yours with me and never had problems. The only thing I would do is sellotape a piece of paper on to it then you can stick some fragile stickers on it without ruining your paint job. I would actually consider taking a plain tube on the plane somehow those luggae handlers manage to hurl everything around. Just a little tip pack your reels in your hand luggage my sl50 has never been the same since it went on a plane

Guys if you're worried about scratching them, then I've got bad news for you... the tubes scratch easily... mine already has a few nicks, scuffs and scratches... On an aeroplane, I guarantee that the tube will get scratched... to prevent it scratching, you'll need to cover them in bubble wrap before sending... not sure it's worth all that!!

If I go through all the effort of painting it etc. I would want it to last at least a couple of trips. I think for now I am just going to put the UA logo on it.

I thought the the objective of a tube is to protect your rod in transit - so if the tube gets scratched etc...its doing its job....right? I made two tubes about 20 years ago - never painted them...and they are both covered in airline tickets, scuffed, scratched etc....looks better than a paint job to me! Shows that my rods move around and dont hang out in my study on a pretty tube

I recently took 2 7ft boat rods in a very cheap tube overseas. Got some funny looks but the airlines never questioned the length. I went on 5 different airlines from very Beeg to tinyish...

The paintworks look awesome but last mere minutes thanks to the attention of the exceptionally diligent baggage handlers... Airline stickers are the heat!!

I believe we do.
A good place to start would be a place like Saplastikor  or even Maizey Plastics or one of those places that sells water pumps, pipes, etc.
I have a set of these caps at home, ordered it some time ago and just never used it, cause I want to build aluminium tubes with aluminium screw in end caps like the ones you get with premium fly rods.

How about making them from PVC with a nice Carbon finish  and coated with 2K?  The ends can be custom PU castings? Feasible?
