So December 2012 has just about come and gone...and what an interesting month it has been!
Fishing has been tough but we have had some successes and some failures! Water conditions have gone from one extreme to the next, from horrible dirty green and cold water, to sparkling deep purple and hot waters!
One of my first trips for the Season was with Debbie and her daughter Sheena …
Debbie was the designated bait catcher for the day - landing some good size Mackerel; while Sheena caught a nice bull Dorado and her man Lloyd caught a nice Daga Salmon (which came off the hook right at the boat and swam away only to surface again a short while later!). We also managed to catch one of the largest Puffer-Fish I have ever seen, as well as some nice Snapper and Slinger!

That afternoon I took out Martin and his wife for a short trip, where we even caught a nice Dorado in and among all the debris and trees floating around due to the heavy rains the week before!
The next day was a trip with Jaco and his father, who have been regulars on board, sadly this trip was hard work and we only managed a couple of Snapper and some Slinger off the bottom and despite my best efforts the Tuna and Dorado evaded us!
However, my very next trip started off with a bang, as within minutes of setting the spread, one of the rigger lines took off like a jet plane! After thinking this was a nice sized Tuna, I was happily mistaken to find out that it was in fact a 20kg Couta!!! Caught on a Kona of all things!!! I am just glad that that particular Kona was rigged with a single hook chain-gang which is what saved us! Sadly the Kona was not the same after that…as most of the skirt was missing! Also managed a couple of nice sized Dorado as well!
Then I had Niel on board - this trip was hard but we had managed to find a nice big school of Tuna in the 5-7kg range, unfortunately these guys were not interested in feeding, we tried everything from Kona’s to Rappala’s to drifting baits to Chumming…they were just not interested in anything we threw at them! We did however get smashed up on the bottom about 6 times with something we could not hold on to and in fact, it pulled so hard that it straightened the hooks! Sadly we ran out of time before we managed to get one up; but I have the spot marked and will be going back with some heavy tackle to catch whatever is lurking beneath! That very afternoon I had 2 gentlemen from the UK on board and with good weather I made my way out to the deep! Water was good but on the cooler side. We found a couple of nice Dorado and had a couple of Marlin strikes too, but sadly they would not stick!

Then on the 24th I had Justin and his mates on board; the weather was good but the water was not great and after a couple of hours of trolling I found some clean and warm water in-between the ships off Umhlanga! And as the sun broke through the clouds we were on with a double-up on Dorado...which we landed - both Bull and Queen of about 8-10kg! As we set the spread again we had another take from another pair of Dorries but after a short fight they came off the hooks and no sooner had they come off the hooks, I watched as a Sailie hit the one lure and gave it a quick run before dropping it and disappearing! Knowing that there was a Sailie around I worked the area trying to see if he would come in for another go at the lures…but to no avail!

(http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee489/Nikao_Fishing/IMG-20121228-00054_zpsf052bf3c.jpg)Then yesterday I was out with almost perfect water … a deep dark purple colour and average temp of 26.5 deg. I headed for the deep only to find that the good water actually started in nice and close! So I dropped lines and started my hunt for Dorado and Tuna! It was not long before we found the Dorado in some 29deg water, the current was screaming south to north which made bottom fishing near impossible, so we decided to keep on trolling! Then all of a sudden the shot gun went screaming away and as I watched the line disappear we saw her jump - and a big Black Marlin armed with only a Torium 30 and 40lb line…this was going to be an interesting one! We had a good hook up and this beautiful fish was giving us a really aerobatic display! When all of a sudden the line parted at the reel but the Black was still not done showing off and carried on giving us a nice display! She was jumping alongside the boat when she turned and almost charged the boat jumping clear out the water and heading straight at us! I managed to throttle back as she jumped clear over the bow of the boat…I guestimate that she was at least 3.5 to 4m! It would have been rather interesting had she jumped on board! But Brian and his family where happy to have seen such a magnificent aerial display!
(http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee489/Nikao_Fishing/IMG-20121229-00061_zps3cd79641.jpg)(http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee489/Nikao_Fishing/IMG-20121229-00064_zps41db7be8.jpg)(http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee489/Nikao_Fishing/IMG-20121229-00063_zpsfb392da6.jpg)(http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee489/Nikao_Fishing/IMG-20121221-00023_zpse4ae37d9.jpg)
Then today was some family time before a Harbour trip in the afternoon - so we headed to the back line for an hour or so! We didn’t catch too much, just a small Pinkie and Lizard Fish, but the kids and Mommy enjoyed themselves!
As for the Harbour trip; Shaun and his two daughters had a great time catching some little Stumpies and Kingies! We also got a small Grunter and a Harbour Eel!

Cool, lekka fun!

Some nice fish their Richard, you have been shoes about your fishing lately. But I can see why. I think I need to stand and wait for you at the harbour mouth next you go out. w;k
Have you chatted to Debby about Mandy eyt?
-
Some nice fish there, the marlin would have been fun if he had stayed on, although on that gear you would probably been out over Christmas

Hi Fritz have been working hard for the fish was good to see you out on the water the other day!! had a good hook up not far from where we saw you!
I did manage to chat to Debbie about Mandy.... She said it would be her pleasure to show her the ropes! I will send her your Number!
@ Dodger- it would have been an interesting fight to say the least but am sure if the line had not snapped we would have got her next to the boat in quick time! well thinking about it....we did have her by the boat quickly considering that she charged us down and that the Toruim has a 6.2-1 retrieve :craz: may have been a very short fight :hehe:

Nice Fishing Rich :clfoto:

Went out this morning only to turn back due to unsafe conditions!
this is not the first time the swell and weather predictions have been wrong!!! When exiting the harbour the Swell was up to at least 2.5m as apposed to the 1.5-1.7m predicted!!
Trip has been moved to another date and clients are happy and safe and that is what matters!

'I think Nikao made a sensible correct decision, based on the sea conditions, his boat and his clients, there is nothing chicken in doing that.

So with the weekend behind here's whats happened!
On Saturday i have to run 2 8 hour trips the first we launched at 4:00am into a light SW wind with swells around 3m at 15 seconds! it was not long before we found some good water nice and close! temp was up around the 26deg marks and water was deep blue and clean! after working the area for a while i kept seeing a dark shadow in the spread but alas it was not ready to commit to any of the lures! after traveling up north we tried a bit of bottom fishing, as we get read to drop lines we hear a report over the radio of a hook up on a Black Marlin about an hour and a half later they landed it on a TLD20 but sadly it got caught up in the props and died :-( The current on the bottom was flying from South to North this was going to be a tough as we where drifting up to 500m off the mark in what felt like seconds! but we did manage a couple of nice sized Snapper before we called it quits for the day and headed back!
After giving the boat a quick clean and grabbing some Chow my next Charter arrived! I had, had to move there trip from the other day when the weather was so bad! as they all walked onto the Dock Deon says that it is only going to be him and i on the boat as "mommy" and the Kids are not wanting to join us this time as they are a bit scared of fishing into the night! :hnthnt: So after a quick fuel stop we exited the harbour at around 14:00 and with the Swell dropping i made my way to the deep blue water to look for that shadow from earlier in the day! after a couple of hours i was starting to get worried as we had not even had a sniff on the lures!! I decided to head back to some shallower waters when :sreel: :sreel: :sreel: as i looked back all i could see was this beautiful sight of a :billf: jumping against the Suns reflection on the water! Woooooohooooo!!!!! after quickly Strapping Deon in to the harness and clearing the lines the fight was on! Deon was smiling From ear to ear! (http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee489/Nikao_Fishing/IMG-20130105-00081_zpscb683295.jpg)
(http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee489/Nikao_Fishing/IMG-20130105-00079_zpsedb9a830.jpg)with only the 2 of us on the boat this was going to be a tough one as i have to skipper, Direct leader, and tackle hooks and fish! but after a 30min she was close to the boat and gave us a good couple of Jumps! after 45min i had her on the leader next to the boat! now was the tricky part to grab hold while leadering the fish! i had asked deon to unclip him self and place the rod back into the gunnel so that he could come give me a hand as i reached out to grab her bill the hook pulled and she quickly darted back down to the depths!! sadly i was unable to get a pic of Deon holding his fish but he got to see her and loved every min of it! after a quick couple of High fives!we rested the spread and continued onward!

Well done mate!! congrats on the :billf:

Sunday looks ok! But Wednesday Morning looks better for now!
-
Hoping to go Sunday, some of us have to work Wednesday :-(
-
Saw the flag on your boat this morning - well done!!!(you can take it down now)
Btw, your boat is listing to starboard, bilge pump is possibly slow??
-
Flag? Spill the beans Richard!
-
Flag? Spill the beans Richard!
probably for the Marlin last weekend :billf:
-
@ Viskop Flag was from the Marlin last week! haven't been out since then!
@dugongboy she will have some water in the luner tube well so that is why she lists as for the :billf: Flag :hnthnt: that will come down on my next trip! :crzy
-
Well done sir, great stuff :+ cred:
-
So on Saturday we headed for the deep water in search of some :billf: and was not long before we started attracting some interest.. sadly non of the :billf: stuck had 3 good hits and we got to see all of them! ended the day with a couple of Small tuna on the way back! water temp was up over 27 deg in the deep and water was clean and full of life. didn't see or get any Dorado which was strange considering the conditions...
Sunday was not much better we headed out and was not long before 2 of my clients started feeling a bit :cnfzd they did push through for a couple of hours before we headed back in! looks like we have some good weather coming this week! just hope it holds for the weekend
-
Bad luck sir, seems like a reel mixed bag of results this weekend, good luck during the week
-
just received a nice email this morning-
I would like to thank Richard from Nikao Fishing adventures for the experience of a life time, he went out of his way to accommodate me. My first experience with a deep-sea charter was well disappointing especially when they started to cut baby sharks heads off and throw them back into the sea calling it "tag and release".
Nikao Fishing adventures (Richard) respects the sea and what is in it, his boat is very well rigged for both game fishing and for bottom fishing, and you get your money's worth from the trip.
My trip started in the afternoon from 14h00, we had just exited the harbor mouth when Richard decided to start trawling for game fish, and after approximately 3 hours of trawling we got hooked into a Black Marlin, my first ever game fish, 123.5kg and 2,5m long (which was released), man what a beautiful fish especially when it jumps out of the water.
I will recommend Nikao Fishing adventures to anyone who wants a enjoyable time on the sea, and will only use Nikao Fishing adventures to go fishing on the sea.
My next goal is to catch Tiger fish with Nikao Fishing adventures.
Once again thanks Richard for a unforgettable experience.

Dodger, I read your caption bellow about when you die and your fishing tackle and it reminded me of my Grandfather who died 12 years ago. This man lived for fishing and was also active with the royal navy from beginning to end of the 2nd world war. He was also a character of note as this short story will illustrate.
Towards the end of his life he pulled me aside and asked me to please take his ashes to NO1 off Durban when the time came for this to be done. He then proceeded to tell me about the good old days again and all the various hundred and thousands of fish he had caught around NO1in his time. I replied that I would do the dues and that I understood why he wanted to go there since he had such fond memories of the place.
There followed a silence of biblical proportions and then a look of dismay and some choice word about how abysmal (WTF?) my IQ was. He clearly thought his genes had not been forwarded at that moment. He then preceded to tell me his reasoning.
He said no that actually what would happen once I had spread his ashes was that the little fish would eat his ashes, the bigger fish would eat the little fish, then the sharks would eat the big fish, the Japs would then catch the sharks which would then end up as shark fin soup in some elite restuarant in Japan and there the soup would be consumed by a Geisha girl.
He then declared proudly that this was his way of getting back inside a Geisha girl. At that stage, I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that we were related.
I miss you Gramps.

So with the weather forecast looking good for the weekend I have 3 trips booked!
The one sadly was cancelled due to rain... so I ended up with a back line/Harbour trip and a short 5 hour No 1 trip!
The Back line harbour trip was an interesting one as we had many interesting species of the backline, Small snapper salmon, Small rock cod and by small I mean 15cm to 20cm black tail and then something I have yet to identify! Anyhow after a couple of hours the guys started to feel a bit green so we headed for the harbour for an hour but unfortunately the harbour was quiet! Not even a nibble! We returned to the doc for about 11:00pm… the next morning I was up and out for a 5:00am launch. As we headed out to No1 we started to set the spread and with only the 3rd line wet we had our first take… a small bonnie.. which on the 30lb tackle was a nice bit of fun for the guys... we continued on we had a nice multiple hook up with 3 lines away. One of the 3 however was screaming away… so we quickly landed another 2 bonnies as Ettienne started to fight what I initially thought to be a large tuna…. After a couple of minutes we could start to see the spool of the reel so I turned around and gave chase to get some line back.. we managed to get most of the line back but this beast of a fish did not want to turn… every time we gave it a chance it just peeled line! There was nothing we could do. I am not even sure the fish knew it was hooked, but after about an hour of following and trying to turn it without any success... we decided it was make or break time so we pushed up the Drag and held on... but this was short lived at the line parted….. I would guess it was a big shark but am not convinced that it was. It would run like a big tuna and had an aggressive head shake... but I guess we will never know what it was now… any way the trip continued and we managed a couple more tuna... 1 yellow fin, 2 skip jacks and 3 bonnies came home with us the rest of the Skip Jacks we managed to release. So in total we had 10 tuna and one large unknown!

The fish in the 2nd pic is a ring-tail cardinal fish (Apogon aureus)

Great stuff Rich!!
-
You had that Zambi on, the fight sounded just like ours when we hooked him up. We had him at the boat on 50lb and that was already a tough one so no chance on 30lb. You buddy is back Rich :hehe:
-
get the hat and the 12/0 ready :hehe:
-
Was just about to offer to come sort him out,
Then realised he already took my one hat!
Get the big sticks out Rich and give him a HIDING!

That is a South African shark, will only take proudly South African merchandise :hehe:
-
I'm not sure that a big Zambie will hold onto a mono leader for so long, the head shake is not typical of a shark, they normally just pull, sounds more like like a bus GT

Ok but normally a shark just pulls and doesn't head shake that much which is why I thought of a bus GT which does that and it's tough to handle on a 30lb set up, what reel was it?

So After leaving the Harbour and getting some pis of a FAT GIRL on her way to chase some :billf: .. I headed to the deeper side of No 1 for some small Tuna.. water was Blue and Clean and ranged between 26 and 28 deg... but with little life and nothing interested in our lures i decided to go do some bottom fishing... conditions where great with little or no current we managed to fish some deep water.. on our first down we found some nice slingers about the size of dinner plates... second down again and them some snapper.. 5 th down returned a nice Captain Fine weighed at 16.2kg.. we where going to release it but as we got her to the boat we could see the blacktips circling below and she had some baro trauma! so we put her in the hatch to be enjoyed on the same down the other 3 guys also had some good hook ups but as hard as we tried non of them made it past the :shrk: so i decided that it would be best to move and try some where else!
As we arrived at the next set of marks we quickly dropped lines and found our self onto a nice school of Snapper also nice and big and and also managed a couple of false englishmen. and a rosy goat fish.. which we released as they are just to pritty to eat... as my client put it!
all in all a good day off the bottom

Nice rock cod.
-
Good fishing Rich!. :+ cred: for the release.
Nice, flat sea to do bottom fishing.
-
Great stuff Richard, The record for a Captain Fine is 12,3kgs so at 16kgs you should be in the record books, well done :+ cred:

Well done on some great catches there.

Thank you for moving away from my mates and not killing more fish. Well done on the Capie, that is a bus :cgrts: :corrct:
As a rule on the boat if those gray marlin are around while we are bottom fishing I move away... don't want to encourage them to be around the boat!
-
:corrct: I wish there were more skippers like you to do that. I do understand the frustration of having finally found some feeding fish and then the razor gang move in, but for all that read this, trust me there is no way passed them and they never get full, pack up and move on or else you will spend the day killing off fish after fish after fish and none of them for home either :corrct:

it is frustrating when you do find some good fish.... but on the plus side i get to try diffrent reefs and new ones all the time... i have found though that if you are on good fish you can get a couple of good fish up before the Razor gang showes up... just have to keep them guessing!!
-
Congrats on a bus Captain Fine Richard :win:
-
Thanks Prego.. Gave us a good run for our money.. was just a pitty the razor gang showed up otherwise we would have tried to revive and release her!
-

So I know i missed my last report.. have had to do some Repairs to the boat and this has taken over 3 weeks to get the right part and get her up and running! but we are all up and running again! headed out to day with a full boat and Dodger aboard!
we decided to troll for some Tuna! was not long before we had some bonnies on board!
Worked our way south and then back up north! the baby bonnies where wild and giving us loads of fun on some light tackle!
Dodger took the helm for most of the trip allowing me to play with the spread and get 8 lines in the water!
ended the trip looking for a :shrk: but with fresh bait in the water we could not find any!! :dunno:
All in all a good fun trip with some light tackle!

That's is one great boat, I do miss her, she will always deliver and she handles the 'snot' superbly.
We had a good day on Sunday, as Nikao said I took the wheel for most of it. We went south to Coopers and back. We pulled lures all the way and back across the colour line, we got a stack of bonnies but no other species, the daisy chain rig we were getting plenty a run the most we had was 4 .
I said to Nikao what about some bottoms? he said just wait. We pulled over and put a bonnie out to try and catch a shark, but just sitting in a smooth sea, no sharks but the charter guys started to produce a lot ot groundbait with the boat on the drift :cnfzd not confused just the colour :hehe:
-
I need to get my hands on some of those for the coming season, I need to get another good cracker this year
-
So the weather was awesome this weekend.. Ended up with a last min Charter for Sunday for a couple of hours.. we launched at 11:00 and dropped lines just off vetchies and trolled down to Blue Lagoon and then out over No1 .
Bumped in to Silvertip playing out on the Far side of No1.. stopped for a quick chat before heading back towards the harbour! Sadly No Action on the troll Clients did not want to try for some bottoms as they where just wanting to see if they would turn a pale shade of Green :cnfzd before they decided to do a full day trip!
-
Launched this Morning with a little break in the weather.. Had Alister and Simon on Board for the UK! but sadly Simon was Feeling a bit :cnfzd for the Night before and did not last to long! We had a couple of small bonnies on before we headed back to the Harbour! Was a short trip but good Fun!
-
So I am a little late with this Report but in any case rather late than never!
As Monday was a Public holiday and Sunday was father’s day and we had some good weather on the horizon I thought it a good idea to take my son Colby and His grandpa Dodger out for session of some light take trolling with a little bit of bottom fishing! Now this was going to be the first time Colby would be getting up at 4:30 to come fishing with me as most of the time we would typically go out from after 7:00 or 8:00 but he has been on at me to take him out fishing like “Daddy” when it is still “night time”.. In any we spent most of the morning on Father’s day rigging some new lures dodger had brought down and getting ready for our trip on the Monday! Colby was very excited so it was an early night for him… any way 4:00 am my alarm goes off and I sneak in to his room expecting the normal response of No daddy I don't want to.. But instead I was greeted with a bright eyed boy itching to get going.. So we got dressed and woke Grandpa up.. Grandma was not too impressed to be woken up so early.. So with the car packed and every one dressed up warmly we headed to the boat… and we were on our way out the Harbour by 6:15 after a long wait at the fuel pump.. We stopped on the back line to look for some bait and let Colby catch something.. But the back line was mobbed with paddle skis and boats so after a quick drift and a couple of Mozies we moved on! I headed down towards blue lagoon where we dropped some lines and worked our way up around the containers and on to the barges! Things where quiet so we made our way out to No1 and tried to drift a couple of Lives while we dropped a couple of bottom traces down.. It was not long before Colby was in to his first “big” fish a nice pan sized snapper which he caught all by himself.. I was a very shocked when he first said daddy I got a fish as I was thinking wow ok line is not even down yet.. But I was wrong.. He had indeed felt the bite on the way down and reeled into the fish.. With a couple of Hi 5 he was smiling and wanted to let his fish go! Which he did and was very pleased to see it swim away! Dodger was next with a nice sized Tomato Rock cod and a snapper followed again by Colby catching yet another Snapper. Shortly after this the Parks board showed up to check for our licenses and make sure everything was in order so a big well done to them.. Was good to see them being so proactive on the water! Was not long after that that we packed up lines and headed back! Was a great day out on the water with my boy and Grandpa!

So the weather this past week has been all over the show! but did manage a night trip on Wednesday Night. went out to see if there are any bek or Daga around.. launched at 6:00pm went out to get some bait.. only managed to find some mozzies no macks or red eye around.... in anycase with the live well loaded we headed out to some of the 80m marks to start our hunt.. current was North to South at about 3km had a couple of good takes but sadly the :shrk: showed up and nailed us so we moved down to some of the shallower reefs.. didn't get any big takers but did manage a couple of Pan sized snapper and slinger before we called it a night...
Yesterday I had a Aussie couple on board for a couple of hours.. launched at 6:00am and went out to the back line for some livies but was slow so decided to go against the crowd and head south down to the cutting water was not bad was nice and blue and between 20 and 21 deg saw loads of redeye around but no action on the schools.. with nothing on the troll we decided to go do some bottom fishing.. again nothing fantastic happening working the wrecks and reefs off the bluff, had loads of small rock cod and snapper but nothing of any size to write home about.. we did how ever see a couple of young Wales around dolphins and surprisingly a Sun fish.. I did try get a pic of the sun fish but the sun was reflecting off the water but did manage a small vid but you can't see to much in that either.. was the first time I have ever seen one. any way was not long after that that we called it a day and made our way back to the harbour..
-
We also fished south on Saturday , think I saw you you off coopers. Must say we scratched for fish and found no bottoms at all.... :cnfzd
Also saw a couple dolphins, whales and had a manta ray come clean out of the water .
-
Hey Corks yip would have been me scratching of Coopers. didn't see to many dolphins around but a did see couple of Whales!
-

Dodger, clearly Richard has seen the boat already. Not sure but by the lay-out looks like it was manufactured by Pitts Marine. Anyway, a good solid boat and a very nice ride. The 90's also a perfect match for her.
Rich, only a sea trial good enough, and at that a long day's hard cruising waiting for the afternoon winds. If they serious and nothing to hide they will/should agree. Offer to pay the fuel.
Good luck hope to see you on the water soon.

well done Richard,
just a small point, generally boats are female according to ancient folk lore, so she is Nereus,
According to Yarns of the Sea, Legends, Myths, and Superstitions: Although women were considered to bring bad luck at sea, mariners always use the pronoun "she" when referring to their ships. Whether its proper name is masculine, or whether it is a man o'war, a battleship, or a nuclear submarine, a ship is always referred to as "she."
This old tradition is thought to stem from the fact that in the Romance languages, the word for "ship" is always in the feminine. For this reason, Mediterranean sailors always referred to their ship as "she", and the practice was adopted over the centuries by their English-speaking counterparts.
One source suggests that a ship "was nearer and dearer to the sailor than anyone except his mother." What better reason to call his ship "she"?
-
Dodger, I have it that anything that can be late be it an aeroplane, train or a ship is referred to as a "she"
Your explanation makes better sense.
