Advice for Nanofil

Over december a friend from Australia gave me 2 spools of Berkley Nanofil.  They are both 10 pound line and are 175yds.  I have 2 questions : 1.  Which reel would this be better suited to, I have a 2500, a 3000 and a 4000 sized reels; and secondly, should I join the 2 spools together or use just one with a suitable backing.  If I must join, which knot would be preferable? 
I have heard all the comments about how this line is very particular about the knots which it likes so this prob means some seriouuuus knot practise in store for me.

I can comment on knots . But you should be able to spool any size reel you mentioned . I would however lean towards a 2500 or 3000 . I know the nanofil are really thin in Diameter . MY personal opinion is that should you spool up a bigger size reel , use a bit of old mono for 'backing' its really unlikely that you will need more that 175 yards on a small spinning reel  .

Rods, Lenny's advice is good. With the 10lb, go with the smaller reels.

Bit of advice here on using Nanofil... I have found it the most frustrating stuff to join a leader to. So frustrating in fact, that on my last trip, after losing a few expensive lures, I got gatvol and gave up using a leader - tied the Nanofil directly to my terminal trace/lure. Worked well for a while and then it started snapping mid cast. My Nanofil has since been retired to the bin.

    I have followed site for a number of months and am really impressed  with the wealth of knowledge that is freely shared by members.
    Braids and other lines (Nanofil is not a braid) have  specific applications. Having said this I am an avid shore based angler that “spins”  for game fish a couple of times a week and have found Nanofil to be the best suited  line for this purpose. It has very little “memory” and coupled with a decent  rod and reel throws spoons / lures a mile.  I generally fish with metal lures (spoons) that  weigh between 40 and 50 grams and use the 12lb Nanofil.  I am pretty sure that the 12lb Nanofil breaks  at a much heavier weight and find it comparable to braids in the 20lb class.
    The recommended knots may be a little tricky to tie but once  you have tied a couple, these are easy. I always use a fluorocarbon leader (and  sometimes a braid leader, then fluorocarbon) and never tie the Nanofil directly  onto the lure.
    The only criticism that I have of Nanofil is that the first  few meters become frayed after a few outings. The pamphlet that accompanies the  product recommends that you regularly check the first few meters of line. Even  when slightly frayed the Nanofil is still incredibly strong.

Ziggy, as you have read, Nanofil is a revolutionary product that casts extremely well. Works for some people... I really persevered with mine, trying all sorts of different knots to tie a leader on. I must add that I was throwing 3-4oz lures... perhaps that's where my problem lies?
I know Fritz also fished with it and eventually binned his as well. But again the great thing about fishing is that what works for you, may not necessarily work for me...

The next braid I want to try out is the new Sufix 832, which has a Gore fibre in it that apparently changes the abrasion resistance quite dramatically. Has been getting rave reviews.

Dispite all the negatives I have had to say about the Nany Line I will be the first to say that it is in my opinion the best line that I have fished with. That is if you have done the knots the corect way so that you dont toss your prized spoon half way to Aus.
 
I have been fishing with Jigman for some time now and out of pure frustration and loosing some nice fish took the Nany line of and replaced it with my trusted Jigman. And now I am happy again. Maybe I should have spent more time learning how to tie the knots?
 
When I got my Nanyline I was told that it was 30lb and was bragging to Tony that I had managed to put my hands on 30lb line and he said he would come back to me about that statement. Lets just say that I could not brag about my 30lb any longer.
The story is that it is marked as 12lb because of some Pommy regulation but in fact breaks at about 24lb. ( Tony correct me if I am whrong please) So thats the reason Nany 12lb feels so strong.

Thanks for all the replies guys.  Will give it a go on my 3000 reel. Must just look for a spare spool for my reel.  Would hate to take off my Spiderwire only to find I'm not happy with the Nanofil.

Nanofil is top class, dont stress....just make sure that you use it for the right application....I use it for light tackle spinning or bait fishing...Good for casting when you need the distance, also the balance of your outfit needs to be suited for the application.

To join a leader I use a modified double albright, just at the end where you have doubled back and you then loop the loop if that makes sense, I do it about four times to end it off....And that works for me.......

Hi there


I have been using nano for about 3 months now and have found it to be brilliant for light tackle spinning. I also found that the knots were tricky at first, I now tie about 6 m of 30 lb jig man in front of the nano this prevents the nano from freying I join this using Bimini twist on both nano and jig man and join them with the catspore knot. I then use a Fluro leader which I attach to the jig man with an improved Albright knot. I then strengthen each knot using uv knot sense glue. I have been so impressed with the casting ability and strength of nano and will definitely recommend it.

Rods , have a look at the Gator range of braids as well , comes in 3 variations (1)Bully braid (2) Gatorbraid 4 weave(carrier) and 8 weave(carrier)  the 8 weave is a casting braid .

 That is great for 2500-4000 as the 10lb nano breaks at about 22lbs the same nano size is sold in Europe as 10kg strain I would suggest filling the reel with some backing first as due to the low diameter of the nano it will be short. You will also notice that u get no wind knots with nano.

I use Berkley whiplash 20lb. But you could use any spare 20lb braid you have lying around. I would say that you use braid in case u hook a real bus and it goes into the backing.
