How much backing in meters do you need on your Yellow /Trout reel ? Was thinking 50 to 80 meters should do  :dunno:

The amount that you can get onto a fly reel is also what you should keep in mind. Also the type of fly line that you put on makes a difference.

For example, I have a 40+ expert line on my lamson reel. I can't even fit a full 50yrds(49m) onto the spool with that line. I also have a Snowbee cassette reel that can take about 65yrds (64m) with a 7wt rio gold line.

But with a standard WF line you should be able to fit 60m of backing.

Kallie the best way to work it out is the long way. Put the flyline onto the reel first and then cover it with backing. Then take it all off onto old empty line spools. Respool you reel with the backing first and then the flyline. Every flyline/backing and flyreel combo will be different.

Thanks Sir. Currently got about 300m backing (expensive R&S braid) on the one reel , that I think is a bit of a waste. Wanna take some off and use it on a grinder for Cats .

Ja 300m is way too much! Have a look in the flyfishing section, they usually stock 20lb dacron, perfect stuff for yellows and trout!

I doubt you would ever need more than 50m backing for trout or yellows. If you let them take even nearly that much line then you are doing something wrong.
