Author Topic: Tackling up for Garrick (Read 10467 times)

The last time I was at Mazeppa the garrick were wild off the front of the island. Admittedly none were hooked but I didn't even have a plug to throw at them so before I head back there I want to tackle up to at least have a shot at them.

At the moment I have a shimano vengeance 8 foot rated to 2oz but capable of throwing a 3oz and a sienna 4000 with 14lb braid. Now I know garrick are a light tackle fish but am I just heading for trouble going this light? My other option is a 12foot elbe but is quite heavy so I'd prefer to throw my lighter rod unless that's going to get me smoked?

Hi Brad, personally I think that might be a bit too light for targetting Garrick at the Island. In an estuary you might be able to get away with going that light but I doubt if you'll land a Garrick comfortably in R&S.

On another note, I have some SERIOUS doubt about a Vengence being able to go up to 3oz. I broke my Vengence this past holiday casting a 1oz jighead with a paddletail at Gourits casting for cob. If you do want to go up to 3oz, or even 2oz for that matter, be very, very carefull.

that must have been a defect in the rod for it to break like that! Take the pieces to the shop you bought it and ask them to replace it. The rod is rated to 2oz so it should at least manage that without breaking. I threw a 3oz and mackie head with mine the other day

Bru, your Sienna is screwed and the vengeances eyes will break after that 40kg Diamond, I wouldnt even target Klipfish with that thing and you know how light I fish

Haha bru that tackle is still 100% checked the drag stack this morning and all that has happened is the heat and sustained pressure caused the grease to be squashed out the washers. The bottom one was bone dry and yet I never had any drag spiking during that fight. Yes I didn't have the back bone to lift that fish when he sat but let's be honest the tackle was never ever meant for landing 40kilo rays!

Like Jakes said, the set-up might be a bit light when targeting Garrick in the surf. It is different in a lagoon where you don't have the waves to contend with. On the other hand, Garrick are clean fighters and with patience you will be able to land it if it does not spool you first.

What is your line capacity on your reel?

I think your setup is fine! Heavy enough, but I think you might need to use a bigger rod to get more distance

Hmmmm I don't want to have to play the fish too long since I like to release my fish so I think a step up is in order.

Oh and Gareth bru those Garrick off the island will often be 20m or less from you! Its an awesome sight to arrive on the point and see them herding the bait fish up against the rocks and smashing them!

Now to try and decide on what tackle to actually use

there is a 10foot version of the vengeance which is rated at 3.5oz. Do you reckon that would also work for throwing a spoon or should I be going even heavier to something like the kingfisher gold class light which is a 12foot if I'm not mistaken

Bru if the Garrick are quite close, that tackle is awesome and I think is perfect, my 2c... The fight might take longer but if you revive the fish properly everything should be 100%

The set-up I use for spinning in the sea is my Exage 110H and SL30 but it is not everyone's cup of tea.

I think you will battle to revive a fish off the island. Not too many spots you can safely sit holding a fish until it can swim off. Well perhaps I should confirm whether this trip is on before buying yet more tackle

The island is quite tough to explain because on TV it looks small but its actually quite big. There are one or two spots you could do it especially on a flatter sea but its quite a hectic spot if you want to stand holding a fish until it perks up enough to swim off

What happened with your T6 and grinder combo? This should be an ideal rig to throw poppers, plugs and larger spoons with ...

Yip if you have ever seen a guy catch 2 shad and be tired, ask Brad to show you! That is some heavy tackle for constant casting I think...

he might be Jakes remember anything under 20kgs doesnt count for him, and its going to be hard to get a 20+ Garrick from the side
