First and foremost is to learn how to cast properly and accurately, best to go attend some casting clinics. If you can't cast you will not catch fish.

Hi Gert,

The casting advice is very good. I see that you are down near PE.
I don't know of many f/f in the area, but can put you in touch with Dave, [ who is a very interesting character, to say the least. ]

If you are intersted I will PM you his number.
If we caught fish on every trip, it would be called " Catching". We don't, and that's why it's called "Fishing".

Hi Gert

A book that could be of some assistance to him is South African Fly Fishing Clinic by Paul Curtis and Jonathan Boulton. It explains all the basics in an easy to understand manner and has good sketches as well. It is aimed at trout fishing but the information is useful for many of our fresh water species. There is also an edition on yellowfish as well as a salt water fly fishing edition which may be of some interest to your son. If you cant find them in your local stores then you should be able to order them online from Mavungana. Hope that helps.

Cool Gert...

Flies you cannot go wrong with the following:

Dry Flies: DDD, RAB, Royal Wulff.
Wet Flies: Woolly Bugger (Olive and Orange), Zonkers, Dragonfly Nymph, Red Eyed Damsel, Grhe.

Rapids you want to use small dry flies, but nymphs are the best and still water is where you would use the royal wulff, rab and woolly buggers...

Hope this helps

The best bit of advice I received as a noob was to retrieve slowly. When you think of the way that aquatic insects move in the water you realize that the standard beginner retrieve of stripping 2 feet of line back then pausing doesn't really mimic much. Twist the line between your figures like you're making a figure 8, this gets your sinking flies to "creep" across the bottom

Great bit of advice there 1/2pt -" if you think you are retrieving slowly, then slow down some more" was the advice I was given when starting out. This works with most flies that imitate aquatice insects that crawl around on the bottom

Hi Gert,

As Herman suggested I would really look at getting in touch with David Nel. He is a veeerryyy interesting FF.

For both bass and trout I would recommend Woolly Buggers, Olive and black with some flash in the tail. Also some Dave's hoppers, DDD's, Zonkers, PTN nymphs, blood worms and prince nymphs.

For still waters i would fish the Dave's hopper with a Blood worm on a static drift, or I would fish the Woolly bugger or Zonkers on a slow-medium retrieve.

For Rivers and streams. I would go RAB's or DDD's also some small ant and beetle patterns sizes 14,16,18. Fishing streams are very different to still waters, especially with dries, as the water drags your flies along, it is essential here to reduce the drag that the water creates. Another tactic that can be used is to cast your woolly bugger directly across stream of the current and let the water drag the fly down and across stream of your position.

Hope this helps a little bit.
