How do you keep premade edible traces from tangling?

2 days in and I am already asking my first question ha ha.


I want to start taking less stuff with me when I go fishing. I was thinking of making premade traces for Kob, Steenbras, Blue Fish, Silvers etc, so that when I go fishing for eds I dont have to take so much stuff with me.


It is obviously easy to "fold up" a shark trace, as the "stiffness" of the carbon coated makes it easy to wrap up and store neatly when not in use.


How do you guys wrap up your edible traces to keep them from tangling? By pre making my edible traces this will obviously save alot of time and effort.

I make up my traces and then roll them up and put each one in its own Zip Lock bag. I do the same with windon leaders. Last year I even had success with traces made up and baited before freezing in Ziplock bag. I had results(not all hooked) with chokka /prawn combos, plain chokka and chokka/sardine combo. I hope to post examples soon.

Hi AD97 , i use the trace pouches u can get at angling shops, which work prettywell or i use the small plastic ziplock bags , just have to watch out they dont bow around all over the beach , the pouches at the tackle shops come in various sizes and fold up pretty small , some can take up to  16 pre-made traces , also take some terminal tackle with u and u can make up some traces on the beach/rocks if u run out.

Ok,
I hate pre-making Edible traces !


Reason being, is 9/10 times i get to the water, then see the wash for eg, and decide that my premade hook snoot is too long !
 
What i used was around 10 or so bank coin packet (the plastic ones) and i used to use a metal file clip, just punch holes on with an office punch and use the metal goody to keep it all together.

I normally make my traces while fishing. But if you know that you only have an hour or two to fish then it is nice to just use ready made traces out of your tackle box. It does save a lot of time even if they are not exactly as you would make them on the spot. It usually does the job.

i also do the bank bag and trace pouch... For galjoen for example i make 10 2/0 and 10 1/0 traces prior to going... 5 of each a bit longer and 5 a bit shorter.

For edibles i use an elbe trace pouch.  Then i put 2 traces each in their own little plastic bag in every pouch.  You don't need to make a single trace while fishing an entire day.

Plastic bank bag is probably the cheaper way as opposed to buying zip-lock bags.  Once I have rolled a trace up I use two small pieces of masking tape to keep the rolled up trace in a circle.  Then place in bag of your choice.  If possible pack seperately.

I use bank bags and put all my kob traces in one section of the pouch all scratching traces with certain sized hooks in another. Bank bags let you label everything so its all easy to find. I hate making traces on the beach!

I agree with Homie, I don't like to make my rigs before the time, but a buddy of mine uses straws to pull the pre-made rigs through, in that way the rig stays straight... It works great for him...

   Thats a great idea and much cheaper than some of the trace pouches around!

i also sometimes use straws and then just use a piece of foam to put over my hook. works great.
 
i also dont make pre-made rigs like the guys have mentioned as i normally want to see the conditions before making up my trace. If for eg the water is calm i would opt for a long trace to give it more movement etc.

use a plastic tie you get with the freezer bags, works well to keep a coiled trace together.

Here's what I do, take old ice cream tubs, cut them 10cm by 10cm, cut little grooves in 2 of the opposite ends, try do it with a hot knife, so that there is no sharp burrs, take the swivel, clip it in one of the first grooves, wind the line around, evry second or third going in a groove. works 100%. Or you can cut up stiff card board from a beer crate, but make several spare cause if they wet you throw them (in a bin of course)
 
Try the mustad rig wallets, they very good and I have had mine for years.  :woo5:

Another way I've seen it done before is cut a 15-20cm piece (small enough to fit onto your tackle bag) off of your kids "pool noodle" and simply roll the traces up around it. Use a pin or toothpick to secure each trace in place on the foam. You should be able to fit enough traces on there for the day and it's very easy to get them off again.

What I have found on more involved traces such as the pulley rig that they tangle even when I use a trace pouch.
So what I do is use plumbers thread tape to bind the trace into a neat loop. The thread tape is easy to remove and does not stick to the trace.
