Hi there Tommo, thanks for a great article, im going to the western Cape in February and March, a friend of mine has a cottage in Struisbaai and am hoping the sea condition are going to be ok, but am looking forward to doing some river and estuary fishing, so this article will come in handy, do you have any ideas on which rivers can be fished in this area and what lures are to be used, this is a completly new aspect for me , when i lived in Durban i used to fish with Eric Cotton whom im still in contact with , he sent this article to me. Looking forward to your input , regards Oliver.    :brbel:     :grk: :tite

Hi Oliver, I haven't fished the Western Cape estuaries, but would imagine that they would be much the same as other estuaries. I would definitely take along some drop shot and bucktail jigs to work the deeper layers of water for kob. Work them with a flick followed by enough of a pause to sink back to the bottom, usually about 3 to four seconds. Use jig heads of about 1/4 ounce and a variety of softbaits. I like the Mcarthy plastics, they seem to be just right in terms of softness and movement and toughness and staying on the hook. The 5" finesse minnows have a lovely action and work really well for kob.
I would also take some surface lures for those times when the mullet are looking restless and nervous and when there are visible chases. Some poppers and Rapala X-Rap Walks should do the trick. Fish these slowly, with plenty of pauses in between.

Apart from that maybe a few spoons, something like a Toby or Slim spoon is great and some Rapala's for trolling would round off your selection.

Good luck, have a great trip!
