Just saw this thread now..... This is a sensitive subject as ther are many out there that are "shark huggers" and whilst a shark is a beautiful and magnificent creature there are far too many in our waters and they are just killing off all the sea life.Personally I hate to see anything get wasted, in other words if you kill a creature you must eat it.I think that a market should be created for Shark meat in SA. Flake and Chips sounds good too me.
there is a market for shark in south africa , pity you get more for it exported to spain and UK than locally a few years ago we caught so much smooth hound shark upto 1.2 tons of gutted clean shark a night , now you hardly find a big hound in falsebay off the boats you still get them from shore but never in the qty we used to catch shore fishing . if the red steenbrass are found to be wiping out reef fish faster than those fish can reproduce should we cull coppers as well ? or how about dolphins , should we herd them together and kill them as well dolphin and chips sounds great to me like the japs do if like in florida they steal the fish of anglers lines and annoy us ? seems like if it effects our fishing negitivly we need to kill it other than try to find a way round it . Great example being the Barrier reefs black marlin plenty sharks there , guys lost plenty huge fish to sharks , switched to ultra heavy tackle and more agressive fishing techn and now loose very few , it does happen but down to about 7% of total catch , if you want to try lighter tackle on the reef expect to loose fish to sharks. Same applies here adapt your fishing techniques , killing the sharks wont solve the problem , if you kill enough some scientist will just close the area you fishing in and you loose not the sharks , look what happened with the jigging ban up north coast. picture this - we all kill the sharks that annoy us while fishing suddenly there are a string of shark attacks on margate beach , who gets to blame us fishermen for killing all the smaller sharks that the bigger sharks feed on , it only takes a few shark huggers / sea shepards to spread the seed in ignorant peoples minds then you really screwed , yes its a sensitive issue and it gets out of hand real easy , normally it only takes one wa#k#r to get every ones blood boiling ,
