Thanks Miles et al. Thing is, I don't want to catch them in 3m, but in 30. This time of year the spotted grunter congregates off our coast in large shoals of like 300 fish, I assume to spawn. They hang in midwater but I don't know anyone that knows how to target them, but have heard of a few incidental catches.

That said, I probably have enough fishing obsessions that I don't need another one, especially one this trickey!

I've speared a little &  have shot grunter 5/6 kgs directly in front of North Pier, the old one, coopers, off antsteys in about 70ft, the barge & fontea. Some of the  shoals have been in the thousands. Best time August to October.

Thanks Mark. Didn't get a chance today. Doesn't look like I'll be able to fish this weekend anyway, got a lift to go fetch my car in Hluhluwe on Sunday.
Give you a call in the week!

i have caught few grunter on vetches pier and from lime stone reef.they move in shallow water, bet 2m-20m, n love crackers. light tackle is also a key ingredient.they are easily spooked and feed shy..only problem is now the shad is full so getting your bait down maybe a problem. they dnt normaly feed around the shad in my experience.ive caught salmon under the shad many times.3/4oz -1/2oz light sinker, 1/0 hook with thin gauge.flouro trace.running sinker on mainline.
the grunter are quite in the bay atm. maybe they are out in the backline. good luck.

I've also caught them in the shallows from the boat a number of times, but not in the deep where they aggregate.

Bud, that was brilliant! I am going back this weekend with my daughter. Weird feeling a grunter nibbling on your fingers :)
