TACKLE BOX MODIFICATIONS

Decided my old Tackle box needed a bit of a revamp!
Was a bit tired....
 

 
First was to add Rod holders to the sides... these hold my Sand spike rod holders...

 
I noticed that underneath the box, the plywood had started to wear thin and was breaking up in areas.

 

 
Then I was tired of carrying my Bait Box in my hands, so I designed a Bait Box holder that fits on top of the box

 

 
On the box, I riveted an angle of aluminium on either side...

 

 
The frame now slides into the gap left be the angle...

 
Frame in place.

 
Then we pop in a little rivet to secure it.

 
Now I have hands free carrying...!

 

 
I also found that with long walks the Tackle Box used to dig into your back.
So I made an aluminium frame, attached it to an A-frame harness and riveted it all into place

I agree with Reefer here, I have an L frame but find it too cumbersome for most fishing trips. It is great for when you lug the heavy shark tackle around but for a eds trip an Orca box or small back pack is perfect! I have my eye on one of the small Orcas and I'm sure if I packed smart I would be able to fish a league out of one!

Ya Craig, I'm a bit of a stickler when it comes to being neat... everything in it's place etc etc. With the Ammo boxes, I just find that everything is piled in a big mess... with the Orca boxes - lots of drawers, compartments, pouches... no scratching round in the dark for stuff... and I can take the kitchen sink with!

True, mine ends up in a jumbled mess after a days fishing. It all starts off neat enough with a pouch for this and a box for that. Problem is one always seems to hunt for that one special trace you tied for the current conditions and it is in the very bottom trace pouch on the last page sort of thing!! So after the first trace is tied the damn thing is already upside down!
 
Question; Where do you store your sinkers in the Orca?

Got a Biotex Washing powder tupperware that goes in the bottom of the Orca... keeps all nice and tidy

Looking good Tony! Just a question though, when you take off the bait box from the "tower", does the lid open Easley enough with the added weight of the aluminum frame on top of it?


@Kumz, who do I need to bribe to get my hands on one of those sinker holder in the tackle boxes? Is there a DIY tut somewhere that I am missing?

The aluminium frame towerweighs nothing. On the beach, I slide it out so that I can sit on top of my box... ! That's the other reason I like the Orca box - I can use it as a chair, which you can't do with the Ammo box H-frames... lazy I know, but it makes my life easier on the beach...

I use the actual frame itself. Where the shoulder straps fastens to the frame... There I put my lazy butt down when the fish are off the bite. Either that or I go looking for the next fishing spot.

Does anybody know where I can get shoulder and kidney straps in the East Rand, Joburg or Pretoria area. I want to make my own L-Frame for carrying my tackle box and bait box but I am struggling to find a place where I can get the straps.

Or if you have an old hiking bag thats not in use ,you can use the straps etc off there , maybe scout around at cash converters / crusaders and see if you can find one there that can be pulled apart .

Most of us either own or inherited a Orca tackle box, and after the first outing with it , our shoulders feels burnt from the straps cutting into it . I have brainstormed this and found a comfortable yet cheap solution as to modifying it creating a more comfortable carry with in my opinion is lighter than a loaded H Frame
 
browsing through cash crusaders i spotted a karrimor baby carrier , which is a light frame that has got the padded shoulder straps and kidney belt, bought mine for R30 without kidney belt and embarked on creating a once off fishing bag for myself .
 
I cut up an broken camping chair and sewed a back support on and made a kidney belt , mounted the orca box on frame and riveted the kidney belt on frame. I chose not to add rod holders as it would in my opinion weaken the frame
 
Here's the end result and i must say its a breeze to walk with .
