This should be a nice one.

SS you will need a finder/GPS to fish effectively. The ocean is a large place and even with all the toys and gadgets we have on our boats we bare scratch the surface of what's out there

As for what model Smash your piggy bank count what you got then double it and buy the biggest one you can afford.
I believe that Lowrance make the best Sonar units It hard to beat there HD models and with a bit of practice its amazing what you can find lurking at he bottom of the ocean the mapping is pretty poor though when compared to the Garmin units, which have far more detail as their contour range is spaced much closer making it easier to make educated guesses as to where you'll find reef and other interesting features such as big drop off's and pinnacles.

On the small boat we have a black and white Hummingbird unit that has actually performs really well It is a GPS Finder combo and although its not going to win any fancy pants prizes the Sonar is surprisingly good (we can pick up our yo-zuris ) and the GPS is easy enough to navigate with as well.

Installing a finder is pretty simple you just need to run power to it place the GPS aerial and transponder in the proper places an you're A for away.

Hello Bennie

Yes i did buy the quad, will have to post a picture of it.
as the location of the sounder be evident.

so it would need to be water proof to a certain extent.
and easy to remove for theft reasons.

Yes you absolutely need one, and you also need a GPS.

The sonar will help you locate bait fish, bottom structure etc, the GPS will help you record that info for next trip.

You do not need super fancy, but I would reccomend the Lowrance Elite 5, it is very good even though an entry level and you will not need to upgrade for a long time.

Yes you can install your self.

Yes it is removable.

I would also like to add that this tool is one of the most important items in your fishing arsenal, and can make a huge dfference to your fishing.

Spend as much as you can on this and spend it wisely.

Definitely like everyone says you MUST get a GPS/sounder combo. With out either you might as well as stay home & keep dry  :hehe: :hehe:

The 2 combos that come to mind Elite 5 or HDS 5, obviously your budget will be the deciding factor for these.

Garmin 140 B&W Fish finder on the kayak with a Garmin e-trex GPS.
I tried to stick the tranny to the hull for a shoot through but it being Polyprop, nothing seems to hold and I hav'nt heard of any solutions as yet :dunno:
I made an Alu flip up bracket which is mounted on the stern with power supply provided from a 7.2 Ah garage door battery. The setup worked well enough for me to outfish my kayaking mates at Rus te Winter by locating structure and water temperature.

For Yakkin' the Garmin 140 display may be somewhat awkward to mount but with the right gimbal placement it sits fine.

I would say it is good value for money and meets my basic requirements.
