Instead of adding rope to my wading stick, i'll clip my harnness onto that bag, that way if your waders fill up with water and you get washed down stream at least i'll be able to save the bag  :crzy

Christo - early in the morning u grinding me- n my head is paining .....

I was hooking fish - i never fell in the vaal  :cnfzd -as yet .... touch wood

You never fall in the Vaal ????? :dunno:

Then either you stick to knee deep water, and or you aren't adventurous enough w;k

Come fish GVP with me on Sunday. I will even row you to the waters ( To save some pain ), and then lets see what happens. :sml:

There are only 2 types of f/f who fish the Vaal. Those who have fallen and those who are yet to fall. :crzy
If we caught fish on every trip, it would be called " Catching". We don't, and that's why it's called "Fishing".

I fished GVP without falling. Slip and slide I did, but fall, nope. If I had to fall down there I would have hurt myself badly. Who knows maybe I was a surfer in my previous life? :lolo:

GVP= GeelvisParadys. The second worst wading water I have ever fished. :sadd. It was this venue that lead me to buying the Ark. w;k

Depending on where you fish, the fishing is briliant, just getting there is a major problem. :sml:

The worst? Top venue at bandit country without a wading staff? Strydom's can be pretty bad too, especially in the middle of a thunder storm , broken wading sticks and all w;k. :hehe: I hear that commando neck is pretty bad too.

Koos, apart from being an experienced Vaalie, you must have got lucky on thst day. w;k

This raises the question, What is the difference between a "slip off a rock " down to chest deep, or a full blooded @rse over kettle fall ? :dunno:

For me, there's no difference. You lost control, :shk Its' just the severity that matters. :crzy :crzy

I slip and slided over rocks in waist deep water. But I kept my balance. But I have fallen over the smallest of rocks at a different venue. The thing is you put your foot down and you slip over a rock and thats how you normally loose your balance and swim.

For me #1 worst venue is the "new spot" in bandit country. :shk Those boulders are sharp, scattered, and just plain nasty.  :unhap Couple that with the flows of 18 - 20 tons , all going through that channel, wading there is a nightmare :unhap :unhap :unhap

Wish we could go back there though. fshg fshg

Kommando Nek is not bad at all. Fished it last year without a wading stick. Cause mine broke as I was bundu bashing over one of the islands. Shortened it to about 30cm, sure aint a wading stick after that, more like a poker if you ask me. duh

I am certainly keen either late March or early April. I reckon we trundle around the river instead of going to Sterkies so guys can make the day trip out if they have other commitments.

Eastco is a lekker place accom wise and huge water expanse, although you already made a trip out there.

Herman - any other cool places between barrage and Parys or below dam wall with accom or camping?

Hi and welcome Michael :welc: .  The Sterkies comment was more tounge in cheek. While I am more than happy to do a Sterkies day trip, I don't know how many of the other guys would be up for driving 3 hours each way for day's fishing. There are loads of places on the Vaal with accommodation, Vaal Streams, YFP and Smilin Thru  are just a few of them.

Howzit Schlosh!

Yeah, I am familiar with a couple of them but not which which is the best inyerms of organising a full outing like you did for Oord Nebo! Good job there BTW!

Trust me, I would so be in the car with you to sterkies often but I would prob fish myself single with the way I am going now. I am having to spoil the lady with a weekend away this weekend.

Thanks man. Fishing yourself single is not that bad, I speak from experience.

Vaal Hackle is a very good venue if you book in advance. That would probably be my first choice, with Oord Nebo as my second choice. It's a pity that I probably wont make the next Vaal Trip with my Lesotho trip coming up next month.

Oh ja, I remember you were going to Lesotho over the Easter weekend was it not?! I'm gonna be heading off to Jozini then so also won't make it if it later than that.

Oord Nebo was great, really enjoyed it, but still need to explore more closer to home.

Michael, go into any fishing shop and buy the Makatoerie ( sp?) booklet that lists all the public venues on the Vaal from the Dam to Potch.( Remember to get the Vaal River one, and not the Vaal Dam one.)
It gives info on each venue as well as contact numbers.
A great little refernce book at a very reasonable price.

Pieter, in May you are already into winter mode, which is dry fly to surface feeding fish, or hunting the LM in the right areas.
Most of the f/f head off to the troot waters from end April to September.

Maybe an Ultimate trip to Big Van's place in winter for trout, then revert back to the Vaal in September?,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Just an idea. w;k
