Well there we go looks like Ziggy is off to the Maldives.. !! Those are awesome pics Marshie, looks like the perfect vacation getaway with some awesome fishing to be had as well , how much tackle did you carry with you and any problems with customs bringing in your own rods reels and plastics /jigs..??

Mike, took around 5 rods, and 30 lures, 30 plastics...  Couldn't get away with more as we were on a "family" holiday.  No issues with customs.  It's the perfect destination for the entire family.  Seriously the best holiday of my life! 

Most resorts within maldives are within a reef and one cannot fish from shore.  This resort is the same, however the small uninhabited island enables you to fish from the rocks into open sea.

Ziggy, pm me if you need any additional details.  There are a few tricks, eg when to go, to ensure you benefit from the low season specials they offer but still get the benefit of awesome weather without the monsoons.

You should also tell us the vacations months due to fishing season on target destination.

Otherwize you can be at the perfect place but in the wrong month...

South America is certainly an option - but the place is so HUGE...thought of trout in Argentina - or somehing more tropical and at the sea

Knysna - now thats a good idea for a local trip - i have been meaning to do that for a while now!

Just give me a shout when you want to come to Knysna and I'll speak to my land lord. They have 3 timber cottages and they all have great views. We also met an Argentinian couple during last year's FIFA W-cup and the guy is a fly fishing guide in Argentina. We still have contact with them and I will get info from him if you are interested.

Last year me and the government spent a month in Vietnam, Cambodia and Malaysia becasue she wanted to see the sights - result....no fishing.

This year, my choice where we go for a month - and green light given for a fishing destination...

I thought of Guatemala/Belize   or somewhere in Agentina...but also like the idea of Cuba
 
I am open to any suggestions provided:
- the fishing does not cost an arm and a leg. So no big time guides and access only with expensive boats, package tours
- More like a "self drive" or 'self organise" option where I am able to go off fishing by myself or with locals  - on the beach, next to any water that has good fish
- reasonable accommodation, no 5 star - anything goes provide there is hot water, decent bed, and clean
- things for the government to do when I am fishing (she likes ruins, temples, crafts and massages...my worst stuff!
- nice non-urban natural environment


Not Mexico, Brazil, USA, Alaska, Canada, UK, Aus, SE Asia, Costa Rica, rest of Africa, Virgin Islands...done all those. And not intersted in Western Europe

The GT's are there throughout the year.  Travel is typically dictated by either the high season (ridiculous rates and we were travelling on a budget) or the monsoons (end of May through to September).  The high season runs from November to March or April if I can recall.  May or October are the best options.  We went in October and had incredible weather.

well, 365 if you preparred to fish through the monsoons!    Let's just say that it is a very special place!

I still have not found the place yet...I hav been looking at Maldives but some problems.
- you cannot just step out the door and fsh - not allowed - so always have to have access to a boat
- you are a captive client....and its all about package tours
- is a one stop destination

I am thinking of 4-6 weeks away, and would want to tour around to places...so it would seem that S America is so far the better option - trout in Argentina - bonefish in Maldives and one other destination maybe ( maybe two more). So kind of a 4 country tour

Back to the drawing board - I do have at least 9 months to plan

Any more bright ideas?

It looks awesome and I would definately go there if I had the money. The Argentinians are very friendly and likes to party.
