Spooling TLD 25's
« on: February 03, 2011, 08:58:47 AM »
Ok, this age old debate get revisited every time I respool.

Wen tout yesterday and got a couple of 1200m spools Berkley Big Game , Electric Blue, 15kg.

Do you think I should spool the whole reel with this mono or should I do some braid backing and only use let's say 250m topshot Berkley?

You can have at least 500 m of 30 Lb line on that reel Jaen?! You need more line? What will you be targeting?

Gonna use it for pulling larger rappies and features and small konas. FAct is with all the stripeys around I wanna give myself a chance if I hook one.

The rational regarding the braid is not for more capacity (that's a bonus), it's durability. I can replace my topshot after every week or 3 fishes. The braid backing will last years.

if only mono you have 500m day 1 but get shorter all the time :-)

If you have sufficient top shot (200m+) then it is the only way to go if your rods can handle it - especially the rollers. I don't agree with the guys who run 50m top shots - for trolling you need more mono to stretch to absorb the strike / rapid runs / changes of direction.

Not sure if I would bother with Dacron or Braid on that line class? you may score a little bit more capacity, but I agree with TM put at least 200 mtrs of nylon. And then what are you going to do with the left over line? Nylon does perish and you have already bought it, You may as well fill it up with mono...its cheap enough.

Jean,
I also ponder the smae all the time. Personally i would avoid braid and go dacron. Why, cos i read so!. If your rods have running eyes, then braid can get caught between roller and frame. Also if you have inexperienced crew on board, braid can cause nasty cuts. So can nylon but no AS BAD.

If you can find good quality 30lb deacron go that route. Next time I spool my tiagra I will be going this route for sure. I just feel 500m of 50lb nylon not enough, but dont wan tto go up to a 50 size reel as they are heavy and cumbersome to most people.

I agree with 100% ,the 30's are nice & lite to work with.

Braid on a graphite reel is not a good idea as I think you may get some distortion under the pressure which may cause alignment problems on the reel, but I am not sure just speculating because the reel manufactureres beef metal reels up to handle braid pressures.

I like the Berkley Big Game, definately my favorite line and would spool it all the way.

If you do go for braid, definately use at least 200m topshot to absorb shock and then use a hollow core braid like JB for your backing, it makes the best join and spools nice and flat.

Thanks guys,

Last night I built myself a line winder and got to work spooling the TLD 25's.
Looks like they took 600m of the Berkley Big Game 15kg each, which is more than enough.

Thanks for all the great advise.
