Author Topic: Unpainted metal spoons - why are we using them? (Read 16441 times)

During a discussion with the owner of a major tackle shop in Dbn this morning, got the impression
that
anglers are buying painted metal spoons, bullet spoons, spoons with holograpgics stuck on etc.
more and more.
Do the fish really prefer these painted spoons or is it a question of catching the angler? I may be
wrong
but I don't think a shad or Natal Snoek does not give a damn about holographics when charing in for
potential meal.(?)

Also, with the Snoek running wild on the East coast presently, why are some guys using solid
metal spoons (which sinks deep) when the fish are within a meter of the surface chasing sprat?
Would'nt a shallow diving lure or a light-weight metal spoon result in more strikes?

Reckon most fancy lures catch the angler rather than the fish!!

My opinion is that flash or shininess definitely plays a part... use a dull spoon and it will catch squat, but shine it up and the Shad will go mal for it. So I'm all for flash/shine/glint/glitter, so a hologram will work to catch the available light and provide a flash. Eg: Aubrey da Gama lures have had the holographic flash on them for years, and they work superbly.
As far as colours go - I believe it's all to do with Contrast, rather than the colour itself. The contrast of distinct colours or a pattern against a background is worth more than anything else IMO...

I have used the Aubrey da Gama lures extensively for Leervis/Garrick and I always add some extra bling to it. I play around with different colored holographic tape and my catch rate definitely increased. With regards to spoons I think the more shine the better the results. I bought the tape from the "Crazy Store" here in town and it had cost about R30-40.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that sometimes I would stick some of the gold tape to one side of a silver spoon to give it the "Sheppie Bomber" effect. The only down side is that it does not last too long if the fish have sharp teeth.

Pity, I was at Knysna in December. (Well, mostly Plett).

I don't mind replacing tape damaged a a catch!!

Another thing to help it stick better is to give it a good coat of clear nail polish. I can go and have a look to see if they have in stock and maybe send it to you?

As for the heavy spoon, the reason is that you can retrieve them really fast without them jumping out the water. You still need to keep your rod tip down. The idea is for them to run in the top 50cm, and at speed! Excites the fish, and doesn't give them a chance to inspect what they are hunting.

Hi PH, there is a Crazy store in Pine Crest, The old Sanlam centre in Pinetown, Have never been in there so dont know if they stock the tape or not, but if one has it they all must have it.
