Heard of a big YFT (35 kg?) last week caught by Chakra.... Otherwise things have been slow in Maputo the last couple of weeks... a few boats going out to do bottoms, but generally the wind and cold has kept most of the guys...

Now with the African Games all boats from Maritimo are grounded so nothing is really going to happen within the next 10 days...

Kela (Clube Naval) went out last weekend... only got a 7 kg kingfish on jigging at Poco.... they think they had a bill between Poco and Baixo Danae... took a lot of line but didn't stick!

Weather has been like a washing machine... swinging from SE-NE-SE-NE!!!!

Team Micaela getting ready to the 2nd leg of the Billfish Classic on 15 October. We'll be taking Oba Oba. Preparation at full speed!

Perfect Wahoo and  :billf: weather. You now need to wait for a NE turning SE and then hit the lull in between before the NE. You might only get 3 or so hours but go straight to the best feature you know of and you will have a ball. Not for the faint hearted however.

Weather has been great the lats few days... Now that the season is just starting (first comp is this coming Saturday, the 15th), the forecast says northerly winds (10 knots) with gusts up to 17!

Team Micaela will be fishing aboard Oba Oba (24 ft Kei Marine Scorpion)!

Apparently some large YFT and Wahoo are around the Poco area... Oh well.... this being a billfish only comp we'll be looking for the smaller ones... the spearo gang has been getting a lot of fish...

So it seems like it's going to be a shaker but hopefully a good one  :billf:

All the big guns are ready including some large mullets I got for skip baits!

Tomorrow's comp postponed to the 22nd due to strong winds!!!

Today several large (+16 kg) couta and wahoo were shot by the spearo gang from club naval. They said the area around Baixo Danae is boling with large game fish...

here is another report from Maputo bay's outing
Maritimo's competetion was supposed to be held Saturday...due to some winds and not so good forecast for Saturday organization decided to postpone the competetion for Sunday

so yesterday we launch at 4:30 with departing time set for 5:30
nearly 20boats attended the competition

weather was cloudy at that time of the day with nearly no wind and very calm seas

I was invited aboard Oba Oba a 24ft Mey Marine with 2x115 Yamaha 4stroke
we were 3 onboard

we headed to boia 3 where there's a big chance on catching some couta...we did catch 3 although they were undersize so it was fish for the pot

since this moment I was the skipper, Miguel (the owner) was sorting out the gear and Fabrizio (a Italian friend) was the fisherman
I was also trying to take some photos and movies but action was so fast that not a single movie/photo was taken during the couta activity (sorry guys)

we kept going out (E) to the 200mts mark
our plan was to reach the 200mts and start heading North towards Poco...then we would fish for a while around the Poco fishing points and after we would come down again to some more throlling around Inhaca points

while heading North we had a strike and fish took loads of line...and vanished when Fabrizio start fighting the fish
same again a bit after and a nice dollie start jumping
this time I was able to start filming while Miguel cleaned the fighting area and set up a kit with a popper in case some more dollies were hanging around
unfortunatelly he was swimming on his own and was on board after a while...a nice 9.9kg dollie

at Poco we saw plenty birds and fish activity but no strikes...although some boats around were catching bonnies, YFT and skipjack

at 11:45 Hakuna Matata released a sailfish and a few moments later we heard that Nakisai released a Marlin

we then had a nice strike and when I reached the fighting area fish was gone...and that happened one more time a few moments later
it seems like there's a curse with me onboard Oba Oba (after the sailfish I caught when I went for the first time fishing 1 1/2year ago)...nearly no more fish caught by myself
I hope the curse is gone next weekend with Naval billfish "classic" that will take place Sat and Sun
I believe this is fishing...we shouldn't take things for granted...going out on a boat doesn't mean that we will come home happy

we then headed East again to the 200mts mark and then South to the fishing points arount Inhaca island
one more strike with no taker and by 15:30 we were back to the club with some more drifts at boia 3

by 14:50 Mon Ami released a Marlin

after cleaning the boat I stayed at the club waiting for the boats arrival...
plenty dollies (between 6 and 10kg), some tunas ranging the 7kg and a few nice size wahoo of around 15kg...with the biggest prize given to Nakizai's 19.1kg wahoo

in the end result was:
1 - Nakizai (marlin)
2- Mon Ami (marlin)
3- Hakuna Matata (sailfish)
biggest fish
1- Nakizai (19.1 wahoo)
2- Hakuna Matata (16.4 wahoo)
3- Nakizai (16.3 wahoo)

will post a few pictures later of lauching and our dollie

in 2 weeks time (10th December) we will have Maritimo last leg of the competetion

for now tight line for us (team Micaela aboard Oba Oba) on Naval competition during next weekend...

Thanx for the report Peterblace!!!

I was fishing on board Oliver and it seems that we had a severe case of the "Midas-Syndrome" because everything we touched, instantly turned into Sh** (instead of gold)

Our livebaits were ravaged by sharks, our skipbaits were mutilated by Wahoo/Couta and countles fish simply fell of the hooks.....

Fortunately a few fish did stick, so at leasst we had something for the pot.

It was a great day out there though, as it beats any day spent at the office..... HANDS DOWN!!!

Congratulations to Nakisai, Mon Ami and Hakuna Matata

Good luck to the guys fishing next weekend's Naval-comp. I'll be out of town so I'm sure the billfish will be wild.....

The Clube Naval Billfish "classic" was cancelled due to "bad" weather! Postponed to sometime next year!!!!

The comp was supposed to have 3 legs in 2011. Clube Naval was able to host ONE fishing competition in 2011!

Classic failure!!!!!!

here is the report from my (our) outing yesterday

final leg of the Maritimo competition went well with nice fishing for us and consolidation of Nakisai as the better boat fishing in Maputo during 2011
congratulations for Nakisai team as indeed they put a big effort on fishing tis year and out fish all the other boats with nearly 1 billfish per leg

regarding our outing, I had a PM on Wednesday late in the evening from well known UA Champ...he was gonna be in Maputo for a client visit and asked me if I was fishing this weekend and he could join me
I mentioned that we had the competition and I was as usual a guest on board Oba Oba...but I would check with the skipper if I could take a guest
all ok and Thursday I took care of sorting out the fishing license for him...as it's mandatory for everyone on board a boat during a competition...no one checks even if the skipper as a license but it's mandatory
anyway...he arrived Friday after a long and exhausting drive...we had super micro social at Maritimo (only the 2 of us) friday night as competition was postponed for Sunday
weather forecast for Saturday was not so good...although wind never picked up
it was good time spent having some 2M's (him) and a Francesinha...typical portuguese dish from Porto
Saturday he had to work and after work another super micro social at Mundo's (now tih my partner)...we chated for a while before I went home for fishing snacks preparation
all set up and at 4:30 we got to Maritimo for 5:30 launching time
sea was flat, some clouds and treat of rain (we had some drops during the day) and temperature around 25
our goal was to sail North as the conditions were perfect to explore the fishing grounds up North...
by 6:40 lines were in the water in the 40/50mts mark...the Champ can write a bit on the spread as he his more experienced...I thought it wasn't that good although we were able to score nicelly
10minutes after...we had a long screaming reel on the short corner kit...I was the skipper/cameramen for the moment and Miguel started clearing the way for the Champ to start the fight
he had a good fight and after a while he was all happy and screaming as it was his first wahoo ever...and a grander...he will post the pics as I don't have any...I will try and collate the videos
on board he (the Champ) estimated over 20kg...I mentioned that last competition winning game fish (also a wahoo) had 19.1kg and was bigger then that...although skinnier...I guessed 18kg

weighted 18.9kg and was the biggest game fish caught yesterday...John F's boat caught a 18kg and was also first...of the lst ones (hehehe)
nice fish tough

we were all happy and yelling WAAAAAAAHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
congratulations on your first wahoo Champ!!!!

lines out again and after a while we were on again...and another strike that failed to hook up...a dorado was jumping around...so we start working the area in search for some dorado

after a while the top gun was on and I hold the rod...a 30y old penn international 30 reel that a few moments earlier we figured out that had a drag problem...
the drag wasn't working and per turn in would loose 3 out (literally the handle was reversing 3 turns out)...it was a fun fight with a lot of stress on my hands and arms as I was controlling the drag with my hands
the Champ was on the wheel/gaff while I was fighting...when suddenly Miguel asked the Champ for the gaff...
...we were all surprised why was he asking for the gaff on the other side of the boat but while reeling in The Winch (as we called the 80 and 130 reels) we found out that another dorado was on...funny hein!!!
it was a small one that only counted for the pot...mine was a very nice fight considering the weight of the fish (7.8kg) and the condition of the tackle

by this time John F was next to us aboard Lucky Luke, a F200 recently bought by one of his friends and because of lack of experience they have asked a experienced fisherman and sailor to go with them
we told him that the area was mad with dorado and he should work that area with us

not long after and again...another double strike of dorado...I was on the wheel/gaff/camera while Miguel was clearing the are...and the Champ fighting...guess what...the same kits
Miguel with The Winch...the Champ with the 1in/3out kit...but this time with a lot more fun as the dorado was slightly bigger and fighting a strange way
the Champ mentioned that this dollie was going like crazy to the bottom...like a YFT would do
I have really nice video footage that definitely need to collate and post for you guys
Miguel's dorado weighted 6.6kg and the Champ's 9.7kg

same lures, same kits...so we decided to change the lures for another kits as fighting a dorado on The Winch was not fun (for the fish and for us)...and fighting any fish on a 1in/3out kit was too tiring for us

the rest of the day was spent trolling towards deeper waters and around Poco and by 13h we call it off and start heading home
by 14h30 we were back in Maritimo for weighting and boat cleaning...and some more 2M's

the Champ had to leave to finish is work while I waited for all the boats to arrive with the catches...we had a big fish and although we weren't able to fight for the first place (as Nakisai released another marlin) but we scored high and maybe we could get 2nd place
unfortunately Hakuna Matata caught a few tunas and relegated us for 3rd place...but we had the biggest fish thanks to the Champ

looking forward for some pictures from the Champ camera...and will work on the video collage so that you can see him in action
I'm also looking forward for John F's report
and to finish...I'm also looking for a comment on the fishing snack's prepared... :hehe:

just to ad that the Champ is now on the way home...so safe trip to you mate and post some pics so that everyone know who you are
100% mate and thanks for being such a good company aboard Oba-Oba...come more frequently and remember that there's a open offer for Ponta do Ouro
