Awesome fish guys! I long for the tropics again tjoe!!

On the subject of barotraumo and deepwater release, if you are stuck in a pinch with no release tool you can make one in seconds.. take the biggest hook on the boat and tie quickly 3 or 4 of the biggest sinkers on the boat to the eye, pinch the barb flat with some pliers onboard and tie your mainline to the bend of the hook..Voila release weight in seconds! Hook in the fishes jaw and lower it down till you can feel it trying to get away where the pressure has equalised its swim bladder and strike the hook out..easy peasy.

Shew.... quick report:

* Weather was not as predicted; had a strong NE blowing for 2/3 of the day;

* Managed 3 1/2 YFT;

* Lost 2 rappies and a speedpro to the sharks (They went straight to the rappies!!!!)

* Hooked and fought for about 30 min each, 2 monster-fat-as-pigs blacktips that revved me properly;

* Water temp stuck at 22.3o C

* The sashimi and salt+pepper+lemon tuna steaks were superb!!!!

Thanks for the report, bad luck about the rappies. We had the same problem at Sodwana a few weeks back.

Nothing much to report back:

* Water temp between 22.4 - 24o C - clean;

* Great sea conditions (as predicted);

* 2.5 YFT (the taxman is still collecting!!!);

* Went deep and targeted saillies and other non toothy things with a full HB spread and had a dorrie spit the hook after a couple of jumps!

* Total of 86.6 nm and 97 L of juice;

* Great day nonetheless;

* Very few local boats outs;

* A meal of fresh salt+pepper+lemon YFT steaks with a nice side salad is definitely hard to beat!  :yft:

we had a wonderful day at sea on the Naval gathering...my usual crew mate Joao is leaving back to Portugal...so we planned a outing as a farewell trip (although there will be 2 more weeks to have some more outings)
we launched at 5:30 (most of the fleet was already on the way)
our plan was to head north to the cuta grounds in the morning and then head out to the blue later in the morning
by 6:45 lines were out (4 rappies) and not long after we got our first (and biggest) cuta...just 100gr under the 5kg...so it didn't count for the comp
then we got a a barracuda...normally a fish that I do not keep but size wise seemed big enough to go on the scales...indeed!!!!...it weighted 5.1kg
then slowly we start getting some rat cuta...1 by 1...very slowly...in total 4
by 9:00 got so slow that we decided to head out to Poco so we set the outriggers with konas and the shotgun with a halfbeak (JohnF's premium baits)
on the way out we saw some birds activity and we were on...I grabbed the rod as it was my first fish for the day...and at gaffing distance (we had the fish 2 times next to the boat) Joao was too scared to get closes to the gunnel and gaff it...we saw it clearly...a big YFT was lost next to the boat...it was our 2nd possible weigh in species
we set lines again and not on that area but closer to Poco we got 4 small YFT...1...2....1...all under sized for the comp but perfect for the pot
the 4th one we had an episode with Joao having a hard time fighting his ~4kg fish....it all started after the strike
Joao grabbed the rod and when he was about to start the fight line started peeling off like hell and then we saw a big splash...from this moment Joao couldn't retrieve anything...not even on sunset nor on 1st gear...we couldn't retrieve any line...then with cost we started gaining line and managed to land it...and noticed not a bite but a fresh billfish strike on the YFT body...
so our guess...Joao started fighting a YFT...ended up fighting a YFT inside a billfish mouth...and went back to fight a YFT
we salso had a schoal of dories coming under the boat to check what was going on...but we were too busy untangling one line with a fish on from the transducer...and the engine keel
and we also saw some big dories free jumping around a floating take away box

Poco was dead...we went over the area  quite a few times and with no activity we decided to start heading south to B45 and B24...getting to B45 we had a strike on the shotgun...a nice dorie that gave us a nice aerial showing...and a hard fight to Joao...and nearly got away just after coming into the boat
in the end was the 2nd biggest fish of the day with 11.9kg

from 13:00 all went dead and no more strikes...B45 and B24 were full of bird and tuna activity but with the wind starting to pick up and the sea getting rougher we decided to start our way back home

water temps ranged from 24.5º to 25.4º...weatherman was not so right about his forecast...we can't trust him anymore

1) double strike
2) dorie
3) catch of the day

Good fish there broder and great UW pic of the dorrie! (clap)

The couta are back in town. Time for some live-baiting with spinning gear!

Could really use a break from the sharks!!!!!
