Long weekend in Moz and beautiful weather all along! Neap tides also... Which means nobody is in town!

We got some nice "bottoming" done yesterday with flat sea all day. Tried some trolling for couta with rappies but no takers. Baixo Ribeiro was (again) empty... No bait!

Heard on the radio, that Yolanda only got one good YFT at Jeremias. Saw one SA boat jigging and drop shoting close to us up north. Oliver went past us trolling for game (outriggers were not open) coming from deep... Guess it was quiet there too...

Water temp was 25.5o C and reasonably clean...

Let's see what happens next weekend at the 4th Maritimo comp.

Gents

Taken from a post on this thread in Nov 2012:

both Pescador (single engine) and Yellow King (2 engines) returned to Naval with fuel problems...same for Kambaku on Saturday on both engines so they had to be towed back
Yellow King (on 1 engine) and Kambaku (on 2 engines) have damaged fuel pumps...

Amandla's engines were damaged as well. Do you know of anyone that claimed the repair cost from their insurance?

Regards

Fanus

As far as I know costs were supported by the owners

All set for tomorrow. 4th leg of Clube Maritimo's Ford Championship.

Weather forecast is great and we're all excited about the tide and moon phase. Predicted to be an excellent day!

Going to do some serious live-baiting for bills.

Huge congrats to the Maguro crew for placing 4th!

It was a tough day fishing wise with only one sailfish released amongst the 20 odd boats (at the end of the day!). Maximvs blanked (becoming an habit now!) and we only had one serious fish that hit the shotgun. We lost it due to a bit of inexperience from the crew but that's fishing!

Overall, not many fish were landed - good wahoo came out though...

The weather was (too) perfect and it was a wonderful day at sea, nevertheless.

unfortunatelly we will have to ask Carushama for his pictures

by the end of the day on Saturday I still believed on that miracle (being 2nd)...then yesterday at the club I have heard the bad news
Mozaya weighted a 22.5kg wahoo, a 14.6 dorado and some other big YFT...and beated Carushama's sailie...
I was 3rd at that moment...and then came Bite Me with a nice size wahoo and 2 big YFT...so I need to stay happy with 4th position and keep on dreaming on a podium position

it was a nice outing for Maguro...flat seas trough out the all day...except during 1h where we had some swell and cold rain (btw mr Prego...canopy allow rain to come in)
I guess we were the only ones under the cloud...a lot of people didn't felt the rain

we had our first stike by 8:30...we thought fish didn't commit and we let the lines out...then we had another strike and I pass the rod to Pedro (my new decky)...first time aboard Maguro and 2nd time out fishing...while reeling in he looked like he needed a coffee and biscuit break...very slow and with line slack we lost the fish
according to the tooth marks on the rapala and the short run it might have been a small couta

when I was briefing Pedro on how to pump and reel in...he mentioned that there was some lure not swiming nicely at the surface...I looked and saw that what we though to be the first non commited strike was a cavala (don't know the translation) slapping at the surface...rsrs...that was safely released

not long after we had another strike on the shotgun (stella 10k on jigging rod)...small kona rigged with a halfbeak...we chased the fish after nearly got spooled and when I start to gain some line...off...no more head shakes...no more fish...reeled in and saw a starightened hook...I guess too much drag set
lesson learned

we kept trolling....working the same area...and we were on again...a sailie was paying on the shotgun halbeak...didn't commit but gave us some emotion aboard..
all set again and on...on the rapie...it was Rui's (ninja) turn...and after a strong 6minute fight we landed a 12.6kg wahoo...
confidence was getting back to the boat (we were accusing Pedro for the bad karma...first the cold rain and swell...then the long line release during the coffee break reel in)...

all set up again...and another strike on the shotgun...after a short fight I have landed a 3.5 rat couta...

so we had a 3-3 on halfbeak at the shotgun..and I wish I had taken more konas rigged for HB

the area was wild with flying fish and HB jumping for their life...and we kept working...I then decided to take the 2 rappies out set the spread all with konas for fast trolling

another missed strike on the shotgun...and HB gone...replaced and short moments after on the short corner a massive shaddow banged on the bullet kona...I was on for another emotive 6min fight...and a 14.6kg wahoo was landed
happiness aboard...and a very lucky landing...fish swallowed the lure...hooks were deep inside his mouth and leader was hanging by a very thin line...ufa...we were lucky...I guess one more run or head shake would bring sadness to the crew!!!

after some clean up aboard...some drinks to recover the strenght...we were ready for some more action

catching a wahoo was one of the '13 goals for Maguro...in 2 weeks we landed 4 wahoo...not bad by catching hein!!
for the experienced...how do you target wahoo's??

while I was setting the lines, shotgun out and still holding the 2 rod...on again...guess where?...shotgun!!!
Rui's turn and after another tiring moment a 5kg dorado was landed...I nearly missed the gaffing cause that fish got excited right next to the boat...and after getting aboard I had to tell my crew to stay away cause fish was wild (I had JohnF's comments in my mind from his last dorado...he nearly broke JohnF's leg with a tail slap)

all set up again and last missed strike...6-6 for the shotgun HB's

at this time we were already heading back towards Maputo...and very happy cause very little fish was caught...I was already dreaming on a podium finish...now you know the rest of the story...

after the coffee break reel in moment Pedro decided to let us fish and he could follow instructions on the wheel...he did a good job
indeed after last outing at Inhaca I do need to take 3 people aboard Maguro...that extra pair of hands give us big help...and at the end of the day I feel less tired

wonderful day at sea...flat seas...24.8º max water temperature...92nm on 155lt...best fuel consuption ever for Maguro

bad karma's still aboard Maximvs...JohnF need a boost!!!

Good report peter...

I need to slaughter a goat or something and do all the rituals... anyway, I'm sticking with "Go big or stay home".

Besides, I gotta deliver a promise I made one year ago....

Nice one Maguro hardluck on falling 2 places at the last minute, but good fishing none the less.

John F time to go back to basics for a while. Its no use chasing the big girls now its just too late in the season. Target game fish with smaller 6" konas you might even land up with a surprise bycatch  :billf: "as even elephants eat peanuts"  w;k

I suppose you're right Prego... I'm gonna dig up my trusty rappies and feathers and Co. and see what happens...

But I tell you what guys this billy-chasing thingy is getting into my nerves and putting my morale down!

went out today on a family ride aboard Oba Oba...Miguel's parents are about to head back to their place in Brazil so he invited me for this outing
weather was perfect...flat sea..no wind
plan was to spend some time at Ilha dos Portugueses...but we took some rods to give it a try
we decided to headed out first and then to the beach...and it was a good decision as we caught a ~15kg YFT (Prego...didn't weight the head but "our" head was way bigger)
Miguel's father fought for 20min on the 1:2 penn senator...it was a good fight and a nice catch
we had no more strikes and headed to Ilha dos Portugueses to chill a bit
it was a nice relaxed outing

Looks like winter is here already (fishing wise). Nana also went out the same day (they went north) and only got small YFT (5-6 kg) and lost a saily...

Nice YFT peter... did you guys followed the bleeding ritual?!

definetely...we folowed the bleeding (and blood cleaning) ritual...and just after taking this picture we cleaned (guts etc) the fish properly
when we got to the club I've fileted the fish and kept a filet for the pot

If the weather reports are correct and don't change it seems the Inhaca challenge will be won today as its looking the only fishable day of the week :shk
