Thanks Tim & Jaen but credit must also go to the skipper Miguel and Peterbalce for allowing me to take the 1st strike of the day
 :+ cred: to them.

@ John F that is a thing of beauty seeing your DIY lure in that Hoo's mouth, well done!

Nice video PB...

@ Prego: that was not a Mann's stretcher.... it was a Rapala x-rap! The setup was a Penn Senator 114H, 50 Lb line and Daiwa STP 50 Lb rod... see, now you can submit your catch to the Angler of the Month!

peterblace and I were invited to go out yesterday on a 45 ft cat (M'bique) and do a bit of fishing!

Well, no fishing was done on my part.... peter got a nice skipjack on a popper...

Talking to other guys here, the general consensus is that gamefish "are gone" and only the odd bill is around... we tried for both quite deep (+200 m) but didn't get a single bite...

I'm sure he'll prepare a more detailed report...

not much to say about the holidays and fishing here in Maputo

we have heard of some billies being released (Fourplay released a marlin and Chakra released a marlin and 2 sailies)...
we also heard of not many fishes being caught during the holidays...so maybe he fish also went on holidays

Saturday Mario, owner of a brand new cruize ship aka a 45ft admiral powercat, tailor made for his day cruize charters at Ilha de Mocambique (North of Mozambique) invited us (Miguel from Oba Oba, JohnF and myself) together with some family and friends for a day at Ilha dos Portugueses (ladys only) and some fishing up North of Maputo

for the ones that know Maputo bay...it's not that compatible to drop people at Ilha dos Portugueses and sail North for fishing...but that was the plan we stick to it

just some details on the boat...it's a 45ft Cat with 2 suites, a nice front lounge (around 10sq meters in size) perfect for my casting/spinning, a pilot cabin with american kitchen, lounge and table and behind a decent 20 sq meters fighting area (with a small rubberduck in the midle)...fitted with 2xyamamar 315 inboard engines and 2x750lt diesel tanks...no fish hatches but loads of room where you can store your fish under the seats on the lounge area
again...it's not a fishing boat but people can fish on it
cruizing speed was 15kts...and max speed is around 23kts (not tested on Saturday)
radar, fish sounder and GPS are installed and were tested...also a VHF radio and a multimedia radio is fitted
boat arrived 3 weeks ago in Maputo...it was made in Cape Town, towed to Richards Bay and after a 30h sailing trip arrived in Maputo with some electrical issues on the engine commands...but already sorted out

it was a sunny day with the South wind blowing...although the cruize ship is very stable and we hardly felt the waves we had to close the windows so that we could all keep warm and dry...it was a very wet ride

getting to blue water in the middle of the bay JohnF set up his bullet head lures to see if some wahoo would take them...Miguel also set up some lures...but no taker
we arrived at Ilha dos Portuguese dropped anchor, dingy out and the beachers were dropped there for a nice and relaxing day

we start heading North to the area were we caught some nice dolies last fishing tournament...
on the way we saw a huge platform/boat around Poco area and decided to do some drifts around that structure in search for some dollies and wahoo...
on the second drift we were intercepted by the chase boat...with people waving at us to keep away from the platform

we received the message, said sorry and move away towards our destination...but the chase boat kept chasing us for a while...until they decided to drop a speed boat...and after a while a fast rib with 5 armed navy people (2 SA and 3 Moz) onboard got next us...the SA official gently talked to us on the radio and after we replyed in Portuguese a very excited and agressive Moz official started talking about us being in a forbiden area while there were maneuvers on a boat and platform boat
we were said to keep a minimum 300mts distance from them

after getting home I used my maritime contacts from the time I was working for the European Maritime Safety Agency and investigate a bit on the vessels
- Deepwater Millennium - deepwater drillship mobilized to do gas research in Mozambique
- Anuket Amber - Combined Chemical And Oil Tanker feeding petrol to Deepwater Millenium
- Timor Challenger - Standby Safety Vessel...this was the chase boat

well...off we went North to our fishing grounds...throlling and throlling with not a single strike...JohnF was trying all his techniques with no success (although he had a very limited lure bag...he even had nightmares the night before with his lure selection)

at the end of our fishing day and already on the way to Ilha dos Portugueses we saw some bird activity and some fish at the surface...I've tried my luck and cast/spin for a while...and after a few persistence I was on for a small skipjack...on my trevala rod fitted with a saltist 4500
it was a nice fight and I had really good fun...unfortunatelly JohnF didn't had his fishing bag and we were not able to stip the belly or even drop him as live bait...and not everyone on board was happy with the time we lost while I was having fun fishing on my light tackle

pictures will be uploaded tonight when I get home

happy new year and all the best in 2012

Well no fish but still a nice outing! Sounds like a really nice boat! With regards to the intervention by the Naval personnel from SA + Moz, it's standard practide in the Mozambican Channel for Oil Companies to seek protection from the Governments in the areas of operation or whilst at anchor or in transit, since piracy has increased. The piracy problem are slowly creeping more south so surprisingly soon we might get some high sea ship jackings closer to our (Moz) coast, which means Maputo Bay area. Due to the influx of shipping and growth of the Maputo/Matola terminals, so in short it's a lucritive "hunting area" for the pirates.

Deepwater Mil belongs to the Drilling Company - Trans Ocean (USA)

I have some friends working on a Drill Ship offshore Tanzania, they have been unsuccessfully attacked by Pirates about 3 times. Also it's a becoming a money spinner for ex South African Special/Elite Force (Army/Police).... The drill ship up in Pemba area are also protected by ex military members.

Me working offshore in Brasil, our rig automatically falls under the Naval protection madate of Marinha do Brasil (Navy)

See you guys in a week or so, Must still meet P/blace...Marcos will let you know when I am there to come and uplift your rod.

Valeu amigos!
Happy days!
