We launched early (05:30) and went straight to Baixo Ribeiro for bait. Nothing. Very strange; haven't caught any bait there in the last 5-6 outings?!?! Neap/spring tides, high/low... oh well....

Sea was completely upside down from Xefina onwards... large swells and washing machine!

Temp was +25oC and after 8:30 the sea turned into a mirror. Absolutely no wind! Winter is here!

Both us and Otoro had a good day at the couta grounds.... good action on the rappies. We got 4 couta (4-6 kg) and did a bit of bottom fishing. Nothing interesting, apart from monster triggers... by mid day, decided to go a bit deeper looking for tuna and maybe a saily. Saw a few birds working on the 40-50 m mark and made a few passes.... small bonnies that were not interested on our offers.

Did some hi speed trolling but came up empty. By 4 pm we were at the club. Good day out with some nice couta ...(and triggerfish) fillets!

with a nice forecast for Sunday we both met at the club at 5:00...MAXIMVS launched first as he was going to get livies...I launched a bit after
plan was to head North to B1 area and late in the morning head deep to the 40/50mt line with sailies setup

we hit the banks with some swell which made us slow down a bit although not too unconfy...just something we were not expecting
by 7:00 lines were out...plan was to go over the marks a few times throlling and then start the drifts with live/dead bait
after a few turns I managed to land a couple of rat couta with some were going a bit over the lure (cutting straight trough the line)...well...at least we had some action
then all went a bit dead and we decided to set the drifts...2 lines out at the surface with baloons...sardine and mackies (took 7 sardine and 4 mackies)
that's when the action begun
strike after strike...plenty action where in some occasion we were still setting the spread and bait was getting knocked and chowed
we even managed to land a big trigger fish and a remora...and Joao nearly jump overboard when I grabbed the remora and said...come and experience the suction power of the remora on your leg

drifting was a first time for my mate (I'm also not too experienced)...he couldn't believe on the action we had
by 11:00 we run out of bait but in the end we had good fun...we met MAXIMVS and decided to set the spread for sailies...and it was a sleepy throlling moment up till we took the lines out at 14:30

clean water...nearly 27C and a wonderful day at sea

with nice "winter forecast" predicted for the weekend I've decided to make a plan for a quick outing on Sunday
plan was simple...no dawn launch (no need to suffer on wake up calls in the middle of the night...it's cold now)...1/2day outing only...some drifts...some trolling
with JohnF struggling with back pain and my usual fishing buddy not in the mood I still decided to give it a try on a solo outing
so prepared the boat Saturday and launched at 7:00 as I previously planned to meet matabixo (launching from Santa Maria) in Jeremias area around 8:30
with nearly no wind forecasted the ride in the bay was not so smooth as expected...but getting to Ilha dos Portugueses all the way out was soft
got to Jeremias at about 8:20 and supplied matabixo (also solo) with some sards and we both set the drifts
no activity (bait or birds) and while I was spinning I saw a showing on the sonar...dropped a cuta spoon and got a big pull...but hook came off (although the cuta spoon had tothies marks) and by 11:00 we called it off...matabixo headed towards Santa Maria and I moved further North for some throlling with 4 lines out (I did carry an extra 5 rod but I guessed it would be looking for big trouble)
2 konas on the outriggers and 2 rappies
not more then 5minutes with lines out I had the outrigger triggering...and a dorie started jumping...cleared the rappies and fought and land the dorie
recoverd the breath...set the lines again and headed to the same spot where I had the strike...but I wasn't able to reach it as I had a 2x strike on the rappies
while I grabbed the first rod I soon noticed that the fish got loose...this is when the other reel started screeming very loud
ouch...that was a fight...I was on sunset (tyrnos 30 2x) with drag set to about 13lb (8lb on strike)
...fish went deep and was pin wheeling all the way to the surface...then I got scared when I saw it...a huge cow wahoo (well huge for me as it was my PB)
I managed to land it and spent some time recovering my breath...I really need it this time as my back was sore
set the lines again and worked the area for a bit more and by 11:45 called it off and headed to Ilha dos Portugueses for a swim and to meet a friend and we both headed back to Maputo where I got at 13:20
flat seas 59nm on 110lt which gave me the best fuel economy ever on otoro (1.86lt/nm)...I was on my own but still carried 250lt and same gear as when I fish with a mate
lessons learned:
1) it's very hard to fish and gaff solo
2) when solo every weird noise causes stress aboard...fighting belt fell on the deck while trolling...as I was on my own got freeking scared with the noise
3) had a lifejacket on the deck (but not wearing it) but I guess I will invest on one of those inflatable PFD
4) I had no life rope attached...I guess it's also a way to go...boat is trolling/in gear...if you fall aboard boat keeps the route without wayting for you

anyone can share experiences here? I would love to hear from other solo anglers

Nice successful quick outing congrats mate. Those solo anglers/skippers are now on jetskis which unfortunately doesn't work from your crossing all the way from Maputo.

Great fishing... especially on your 3 hour first solo outing.

A few things that come to mind...

1. Put motors in neutral or off when fighting a fish

2. Have a safety line between you and killer switch when trolling or driving...

3. A PFD is certainly a good thing to have permanently

4. Also, share a float plan with friends/family (we always do it I know!)

5. A long gaff might help
