Wire rings for spoons

As promised, here is how you make your own wire rings for your spoon instead of using split rings.

Firstly for this demo I used some red coated wire to make it easier to see and understand what is going on.

When I attach my hooks and swivels to my spoons I use #4 or #5 American fishing wire. For the guys that have not done this use some #4 untill you get used to it. It is much easier to work with.

You start of by making a Granny knot in a length of wire. This should have been the very first knot you learned when you started tieing your own shoes.

Now with the crossed end of the ring facing you, take the tag on the right hand side and insurt it into the ring from the bottom. ( photo 2) and do the same with the tag on the left. But this time only from the top of the ring.( photo 3 )

Now if you look at photo 3 you will notice the tag ends crossing each other with the right hand side tag crossing over the left hand one.

Swop the two around so that left goes over right as in photo 4.

Now carry on with putting the tags ends in to the ring one more time. The ring should look something like photo 5

Carry on with this untill you get back to where the wires are crossing each other. photo 6 Now remember to put the right hand tag under the left one before you proceed.

Repeat this proces untill the desired thickness off ring has been reached.

At this stage you can see that the ring is now starting to look like something.

To tie this ring off neatly. you start of by bending one of your tag ends away from the ring as shown it photo 7. Bring the tag end back in thru the ring to start binding it up. photo 8. Carry on with this untill you have gone around the ring 4-6 times. As you can see in photo 9

Clip the tag end of and press the sharp end down so that it does not get stuck an anything. photo 10 I have tried to do a Hay wire twist to finish finish it of and have failed. Thats the reason I clip it of using a pliers.

Now going right back to photo 1. where you started the ring. Pull the ring closed untill you reached the desired ring size and hold as I have in photo 11. Keep your hand in this posision untill you have managed to put each tag end thru the ring once. If you loos the tension at this stage you will end up with a untidy ring. Photo 12 Remember to put one tag end under the other one before crossing each other

Once you have reached the desired thicknes on your ring ( 5-6 turns ) it should look something like this one in photo 13. Now you can start to finish of each tag end photo 14. and at the end of this exersize it should look something like photo 15

To give you an idea of how small the ring is. I was using a size 6/0 Gamakatsu Octopus hook.

I do the same with Nylon coated trace and then fuse it together with a lighter instead of ending it with twists, although that's only on the really small spoons I hunt Shad an wave Garrick with. on the bigger spoons I stick to the same technique as you.

Awesome post Fritz my rings look like thee dogs breakfast and the ends are so sharp that sometimes I think I could leave the hook off

Once you cliped the tag ends of, you must use a small long nose pliers to pinch the sharp ends down. Works like a charm.
