How much, and what tackle do you carry on your boat on a typical day off-shore?

depends on what I plan to do, or what is around. But I always take the following:

10kg class Rod and reels x 8
flick stick for casting into bonnies and snoek X 2
Live bait stick with small kp X 2
VJ rods X 2
Bottom sticks X 2
Whipping stick X 1

I carry a selection of traces, lures, feathers and jigs.

On the small boat I have now I have only done 2 trips, but obviously I do not take as much as mentioned above

for a general day in summer in the transkei and 4 anglers we will ahve 4 trolling rods, 150lb, 2x30 and a 20, 5-6 bottom rods ()at least 1 bottom rod as a spare, a jigging rod that can be used as a bait rod, bottom rod or trolling rod, at least 2 2 bait rods, and a fly rod in the hatch.
I try to keep tackle to a minimum, 2 bottom tackle boxes, the small clear flat 1's, with just enough for the day, i choose my lures for each day before the trip so I dont have a tackle shop with me, a few jigs and about 40 sinkers from 16oz up to the monster 1.5kg guys.

Hell, how many rod holders do you have on the boat? Surely you know what you are doing for the day and won't take the whole lot?

We tend to take just what we need, Dorado, one trap stick each and 2 bait rods etc. But it depends on what we doing. Generally we decide on our target species and take what we need and that's all.

Dunno about you, but for me it is about getting fish.

Just to be clear Bennie, I only carry one of the set-ups mentioned above, not all 3 it is either heavy, standard or light. So on average 22 rigs

So typically in summer we would collect live bait so spinning tackle needed, also used for casting lures and pitching livies.
Then we would go and troll, I use different rods for Konas/Feathers and for Rapalas + one needs to run teasers. So 6 x 30lb for trolling, 4 x 20lb for Rapala's and 2 x 20lb for teasers. 20lb also used for trap sticks and 30lbs used on down riggers.
If this does not work out then on the way back you stop and jig or do bottom.

So I start my day with Plan A
Usually this will change at some point during the morning to a plan B depending on conditions which will dictate, and then there is plan C, D, E etc. until you find fish.

Some days Plan A works, other days you need to improvise and changes tactics and then you need different tackle and there it is.

My boat can comfortably  carry 23 rigs, 11 on the T-top and 12 in the gunnels without any clutter.

I have gone out before with just the tackle for my plan and regreted it, if I need to change tactics I want the right tackle there when I need it. I need to get fish and I have 8hrs to do so and so I work on a time routine if A does not work after X time move to plan B and so on.

I also do not like to rig up on the boat so each rod is pre-rigged for a quick and easy change over of tactics without wasting any time.

In the end I need to get my clients fish.

Me, on a regular trip

3 jigging setups, a couple extra reels loaded with braid
2 popping setups
My guest usually like bringing their tackle an then it's a nightmare, each usually brings 2 rods one jigging and another popping setup
Jigs, popping lures and trolling lures, rapalas, storms, etc
Sometimes we also do inshore trolling with this jigging setups

On a non regular trip, if trolling for cuberas & co the above setup plus 5 trolling 30lb rods

If trolling for marlin, again the initial list plus 5 or 6 80lbs setups

4 guys at the boat it goes from 11 rods to maximum 16 rods

we are normally 3-4 people on the boat including the skipper (Rory) on a normal game fishing trip we will take

2 x Flick sticks doubling up as bait rods
1 x bottom rod or 4 if my dads fishing 
1 rod of your choice if you are on a particular mission such as popping or jigging

I don't own a boat, so can't really comment on what I would take if I did, but it would probably be a bunch...
But there is defintely something to be said for the guys who have their system down pat, and are able to minimise how many set ups they take...

Down here in the Cape, when I actually get the chance to go fishing, on various boats, its very much a species dependant thing... not having the variety of options one does up on the east coast, its easier to streamline your tackle I guess... not that it makes most of the guys I've seen take less tackle!!!

Personally for Inshore here I'm carrying 4, maybe 5 rods...

Jigging:
Jigging Master 100 with Ryoga - Light jigging outfit ( PE 2 )
JigStar 250 with either JM PE4 or Ocea Jigger 2000P ( PE 4 )

Spinning:
Ocean Revolution Stealth STK76 with Stella 6000 ( PE 4 )
Berkley Air 9' XH with Stella 8000  and 20lb Fireline.

Baiting:
St.Croix Tidemaster 7 MH with Calcutta and 30lb Braid

If I get a 1000 pounder I will just kick off Junior and there will be enough free board and space on the boat At least I know he can swim a couple of K's home not sure about the time though.
Greg I can understand why we are fishing so lekker together on our boats. We have most of the stuff duplicated. Its just the waxed cotton I forgot. and the "stiff" elastics.
FA if you have space, pack the boat no need to tun back to change rods.
Lekker week for all you seasick longing bastards it is near holiday time.

FA I know exactly why. I can rig for myself and can chop and change but if I have crew I too carry options as it saves time re-rigging for lighter options X 6. At times when the fish come on in our waters it is momentary and by the time you have a spread suitable the bite has gone.

There's definitely similarity in what the guys are taking on board.

We have quite a lot of fishing variety off Shelly (tuna, AJ's, YT, dorries, couta and billfish) so we normally take a few options with so we have the right gear no matter what we end up chasing (our nickname here is "porcupine" cos of all the rigs on board!)

Normal day out:
3 x 30lb rigs (normal tuna chunking)
4 x 50lb rigs (if the johnnies are chasing our tuna!)
3 x jigging rigs (2 x Blue rose + Stella 18k, JSR 350 + Gorilla 12c)
2 x flick sticks
2 x trap sticks
1 x Sabiki live bait rod

Our summer tackle requirements call for the bigger guns to chase billies:
3 x 30lb rigs
4 x 50lb rigs
2 x 80lb rigs
3 x jigging rigs as above
2 x trap sticks

This is mostly for lure trolling.

Trap stick is any stick stuck off the back when dirfting left unattended with a live bait on whilst you jig, spin or bottom fish

Flick stick is a light spinning stick

Whipping stick is a slow action stick usually used with a KP reel for vertically whipping spoons.
