Santa Maria via Maputo - Katembe Bridge
« on: October 03, 2019, 03:19:12 PM »
G'day UAers... Anyone with info regarding the route to Santa Maria via the new bridge. I've heard a few horror stories of guys driving to Santa Maria and getting stuck in days gone by. Has the new road brought on a general improvement of the surrounding roads? Has anyone driven to Santa Maria recently?
Forgive me Father for I have spinned... It's been three weeks since my last cob session.

The new bridge and road goes straight to the border and Ponta.

If you want to go to Santa Maria, you need to go through the Maputo Special Reserve. Same old road... nothing has changed apart from the ferry crossing which is history now... and obviously the Catembe to Salamanga/MSR main gate (about 40 km of good tarred road).

Fishstyx, i have driven the road from the North Entrance Gate to Santa many times.....its not that bad, has a small bad section just as you pass the first big dam and then a couple spots after that but nothing ridiculous. Guys do tow upto Chemucane, Mucombo, Santa but I wouldnt do it unless you have a very very sturdy well built trailer with a narrow wheel track and probably 15ft or less. Just take your time and having a second vehicle would be wise!

Thanks gents... Yep, thinking about a few days fishing the Gate. Planning on travelling light, no trailer, no boat. I've done the boat transfer from Maputo to Machangulo lodge before and while that's an option, I 'd like to try the drive right up to Santa. Thanks again.

Definitely  drive if you want to fish off the shore. Lots of places around Hells Gate to fish as well, you can go upto Ponta Abril, Mucombo and Chemucane etc....plan around nice tides!

Thanks bud... Yeah, last time I was there, I was forced to watch my mates pulling some proper fish. I'd injured my shoulder and could barely hold a rod let alone cast one. So this envisaged trip is a revenge trip with a strong shoulder. It will be mostly from shore but I'll also try and get myself onto a charter for the odd YFT, dorrie or Amber.
