BBC Planet Earth III filming - Help Required!

Hi there!


My name is Abigail Brown, I work at the BBC Natural History Unit in the UK. I am working on the new landmark series called Planet Earth III and we are looking into filming tigerfish for our freshwater episode, more specifically the incredible discovery that tigerfish can hunt barn swallows in flight. This behaviour was first observed by scientists in Schroda Dam - see this link - https://www.nature.com/news/video-fish-leaps-to-catch-birds-on-the-wing-1.14496.

I live quite close to Schroda and have heard of the phenomenon and seen the photos. I had the opportunity to fish the dam last year but sadly it never materialised due to red tape. Tigers are such voracious feeders that I can completely imagine them honing their skills to achieve this. I hope you manage to get more footage on this for broadcast... It will doubtless be fascinating.

I was amazed by the footage when it first appeared. I have fished for Tigers my whole life, but never seen or heard of this feeding technique before this. I understand that Schroda is quite unique in that it is one of the smallest man made dams where Tigers have bred successfully - the small water body could have forced them to adapt to airborne food.

I have seen footage of Giant Trevally hunting seabirds. I suppose if those in the salt can do it, nothing prevents similar predatory behaviour in the fresh ?
