Single Hook Chain Rigs

I'm in the process of rigging some small kona's from Pulsator & Bite Me, we have a lot of success on small kona's with a single hook chain rig as in the pics. One of the issues is finding good split rings especially for the heavier BKK Makaira hooks.

Why not rig them just on Cable with a free swinging single? Just as effective and way less trouble and cost?

The local 1.6mm oval split rings will be must easier to work with, think they are a Swannel product..You wont open them, work lekker with big hooks and easy to clip on and off..We fight fish on locked down drag on them ;)

Or the Hookncooks'  suggestion above sounds like the right solution?

Thanks guys, we have tried the single wire rig with / without a swivel & we have more hook ups on the single chain so it works for us.
I have some 1.2mm swannels, never thought about using them in this context, l use them to attach rappies

Not referring to the quickclips though, I am not sure though also who makes those oval clips but assume it is a swannel product,

Some great handiwork there Roger... I love using shrink tube... Always makes everything look so neat. But wouldn't use it in this application, the problem being that salt water gets in and doesn't get out, resulting in unnecessary corrosion.

Thakks Martin, the chain is 316 stainless so it shouldn't corrode

If you use Heatshrink, use the adhesive one, then water doesnt get inside.

Just started and finished 10 single hook chain rigs about an hour. The swannel clips make it soooo easy compared to split rings.


Now I'm low on chain so hopefully I can remember where I bought it?

Hi Rodger, the chain you can get from Multi-Quip in Springfield park, dunno if you have them up your side.
Personally I don't use chains at all on any kona's and prefer to make a stiff wire rig that locks into the head with the hook facing down (if you set it facing up your kona will swim upside down) and these stiff rigs work superb on the smaller kona's with excellent hook ups, the hook used will be dependant on what class tackle you are fishing with. For 50lb class and less I like to use the SS closed eye Siwash (aka Sailfish) hooks as they penetrate deep and hook ups are good, we very seldom drop a fish on these. These hooks usually come in 6/0, 7/0, 8/0 and 9/0. Mustad 95160 hook

Hi Rodger,

Usually I just drill out the rear hole to be able to fit some fuel hose which I glue a short piece in, then the crimp squeezes nicely into the hose tight enough not to spin but loose enough to slide off when you get a hook up. On the bigger konas I use 2.0mm leader but on smaller konas I will use 1.6 or 1.7mm and very small ones 1.3mm and crimp using aluminium crimps. For the 2.0 or 1.7/1.7mm 6mm ID hose is ok, for the 1.3mm you can split the hose and make the ID smaller before you glue in. Super glue works fine. TIP. When drilling the resin head don't go immediately to the size drill you want to hole to be, go up in 0.5mm increments or you risk cracking the resin head.
