Hi All,

Having issues with the FG knot, braid to braid, when using very thick braid leaders. No issues with the thinner braid to braid connections but when using 150lb plus leaders and lets say 42 or 50lb mainline I'm struggling.

Any ideas?

Thicker Braid leaders - Bimini mainline to form a loop. Braid Stitch the Leader. Join together with a Modified CatsPaw.

Thanks Tony, I get you. So braid stitch leader into a Tanaka loop, bimini on mainline and then cats paw the two..

So aside from that option I'm assuming there is no way to FG thick braid leader..?

Use the Modified CatsPaw, it's an easier knot; also uses very small loops.

You can use the FG Knot, but for me the FG Knot in thick braid leader of 150lb upwards is just too bulky to cast.

The "bulkiness" is what I'm trying to avoid and also it doesn't look quite right..

Have had success using PR knot when tying thin braid to thicker braid as a casting leader
Dont see why it wont work with thicker braid

Looks good but looks like you need a PR bobbin to tie that knot..

Correct. I tie it before I leave home. I use a fly tying bobbin with a plastic ghost cotton spool. I put a barrel sinker in the
middle of the plastic spool for weight.
I adjust the tension by varying the number of wraps around the arm of the bobbin.
Only paid about R70 for the entire setup and it works like a dream.

I have a fly tying bobbin at home. I will give it a whirl and see what happens.

I hope I am not jacking your thread Kes, but whilst on the same topic of tying the braided leader to braided main line usibg the FG knot.

And yes, I have read all the 100000's of threads about the FG

I am sure those now seasoned, or fundi's, or the achievers of tying the FG knot will just tell me "practice practice, practise more, try some more, nee man oefen nog, gaan speel nog meer, do this, do that".....& I will respond saying
"Ja ja".

As easy as it may seem described in a video clip or tutorial, it remains a challenge to me.

I love my knots, I tie all the most common knots needed in all my angling facets, & it will sound as if I am a "greenhorn" of which I am definitely not, but this FG is getting the better of me.
I hope I am not the only ID-10 -T case out there.
I am sure guys are laughing their asses off,

Be it the main line under a bit of tension or the relaxed method as seen in Youtube, its like I am missing the very crucial or key instruction to success.
Then I resort back to the PR knot, or double Uni, of which the FG still haunts me telling me " I have won, hahahaha.....you not gonna win me".

I must say, the FG in my eyes is the "go to knot" for braided main to braided leader.
And I want to master it.....I just have to.

So, a question to those who struggled as I do, or did struggle......what is that 1 or 2 crucial points to remember to spy when tying this knot to have success each time.
Pse, hints, pointers, & heads up, not generalized comment, as that will not tie my FG.

And lastly, will the latest Daiichi knot assist tool 2.0 be suitable for use in tying braid to braid the FG way, or only braid to mono ?

I hope I have some sympathizers out there.

Don't waste your money on that tool Ben unless you getting it for a real steal. You can get the same effect of that tool with your thumb and index finger. I'll send you a video on WhatsApp on how to do it.

Yes, its expensive but if I keep on struggling I will be one of the many suckers ending up with a toy most probably lying around unused if that to fails me.

I will appreciate yr video clip, you got my number. Maybe its just the missing link I've been looking for

HI BJR yes I have the daichi knot assist.Was also having problems with the fg.mainly because of bad teeth and cant grip the line with them.Its perfect for tying your braid mainline to braid leader to florocarbon.Perfect knots everytime.I only spin R and S so the thickest floro i use is 0.60 diameter and I think that anything heavier might not grip too well on the tool.Cost me R600.00 back then but for me it was worth every cent.I know guys that can do it with their eyes closed and envy them but because of my problems I had to get one dont regret.If you thinking of getting one just check because the import laws have changed and you might have to pay duties.

Morning Garrickhunter.....aha, Thks for adding the "toothy" part, as I hate the thin braid between my teeth, cause It slips, even tying a knot in it, trying to get a better grip on it & its really not even an option for me as the frustration beats the effort.

Am glad to hear the tool works effortlessly for you, & yes it will have its limits, understandable.

Had a lovely chat with Garrickhunter re the Knot assist tool. He ties a perfect knot each time with a varisntnof braided dismeters, especislly braided casting leader to braid main line & without any hickups.
Well, if my knotty issue continues I will most defnitely be looking at an assist tool of some sort, but will exhaust all my avenues 1st.

The only downside is, its heavily expensive, shipping & import tax duties to be payed. Its the right thing for our economy I suppose (taxes) , but seriously so expensive ?

A friend showed me 2 other models now on the market, of which are more basic than the Daiichi tool, but you would reckon it will cost less than the Daiichi ?! Nope.....it works out just as expensive.
Now time has arrived for a homegrown DIY tool same as the EZ Knotter.
I have most basic components, just to "cut & paste" , refine, tune & test.
If there are guys who can suggest any parts for the bobbins on either side pse share your thoughts. Lets make a SA product.

That's serious money for something very simple.I'm sure my son can 3D print those bobbins in less than an hour.
