Going to try and keep it short - typing mostly with one hand (you will find out in due course)

Left JHB on Saturday morning 02:00, heading for Bloem. 5 guys in the Cruiser, but we packed the trailer well, with some stuff on the roofrack, so that we could put 1 person in the very back so that the back seat was not too crowded. Heard about black ice on the road between Barkley East and Elliot, so changed route to go via Dordrecht to Elliot. It's a bit longer, but flatter. Road was not great, but OK. Just before Elliot hit the first of many stop/go hold ups. Wasted a fair bit of time, but not too bad. After Ugie the road was good up until it joined the Engcobo/Mthatha road, then more roadworks. Arrived at Hole in the wall around 16:00.

Fish coming out at this time of the year is mostly shad, lots of them. There were some nice exceptions. Andre hit into a small skate from the Queen, and managed to land it and let it go, and Tim hooked into a smallish hammerhead while fishing in light tackle for shad, but got bitten off before he could land it. Theo landed a 60 something cm cob, which we unfortunately didn't get to taste as he was taking it home with him. It was the only cob I saw on this trip. Some nice blacktail and bronze bream also came out, and I saw a local with a nice yellow bellied rock cod.

Coming off the rocks on Wednesday afternoon, I slipped, and fell onto my left hand, which proceeded to swell at an alarming rate. Had a 4th year med student have a look, but without xrays it's difficult to see anything. We bandaged it up, and left it at that, but that as my fishing done for the trip. The hand was fine, as long as I didn't do too much with it. Drove back with it on the Saturday.

Drove back via Kokstad and Underberg. This route was better, but you have to get through Mthatha and Kokstad before the local Saturday morning traffic gets going, so we left at 03:00 and were through quickly enough. Back at home 15:45.

My wife hurried me off to Sandton emergency by 16:30, and they were rather busy, so we only got out of there at 21:00. Could only get an appointment to see the surgeon (same one that fixed my other hand), on Wednesday 15:00, so off to see him later today.

Had surgery yesterday (plate and screws), and now have much better motion. 10 days and they will take the stiches out, and 6 weeks for the bones to heal. But feeling good!

Didn't mention that my dentist wanted me to have my wisdom tooth out as well, so did that on Tuesday.

Sorry to hear that surgery was needed  :-( , but as long as the bones knit 100%. My right shoulder and upper arm are both bionic and 100%, although much weaker. , no pain ever  :-) .  :toppie:

Shad are always plentiful at this time of the year. They really are a great eating fish, and we had plenty of them to eat. Fortunately / unfortunately, they don't taste the same in JHB, so I don't bring any home with me.

I am part of a wonderful medical aid called Bankmed, who help me out in times like this. Not cheap, but good.
