Beginner, South Coast, Southbroom, - help needed.

Good day.


I am new on this forum and just moved to Southbroom.


I am only familiar with fishing in Scandinavia and need beginners advise.


I do not (yet) seek to catch big fish, just want to make entry with trying to catch something eatable here from Southbroom.


I did not even buy my gear yet, want advise from someone whom knows the area and the technique from the South Coast.


I plan to buy 2 fully equipped rods seeing my son joins me from time to time. I want good quality and would not mind paying R2-3000 per set.


I would like to start from the beach here in Southbroom, - not the rocks yet. In order to get familiar with the gear and not 'fool around' as the beginner I am 


As mentioned, - eatable fish for the braii and from beach, - later on when I am more trained I can then move on for the bigger catches and more tactical fishing.


I would like to get advise in regards to what 2 rods to purchase, line, and bait to get the best possible start. Both for spinning and bottom fishing 


Any advise will be appreciated a lot, and maybe also good beaches to use here in Southbroom, - but I presume small eatable species can be caught everywhere here.

If I  may recommend take a trip up to the tackle box in Shelly beach - have a chat with Adam!? He has helped me out with getting started! Great advice and a decent selection of tackle...

I just bought a couch at a store called Luckys Discount Centre in Manaba, Margate. They have a lot of different furniture but also a HUGE selection of rods, tackle, fishing clothing etc. Does anyone know that shop, - and if they have as good advise as they have selection.


Because I would prefer to buy the gear same place as I get advise, and from persons who also have a passion for fishing....

I have been to luckys a couple of times aswell,  speak to Shane!? Explain to him what your plan is with regards to what you want to target ect and he should be able to set you up. Word of advice... Leave the wifey at home as once the conversation starts your gonna be busy for awhile! Lol...

I want to steal when it is legal, and it is if I only steal with my ears and my eyes! And if those guys have some useful advise I want it.

I've never been to Lucky's but spoken to them a few times by phone. They seem to be very knowledgeable. Good luck and tell us about your catches when they start happening.

Hi Jacobo  my experience of Southbroom is as follows . I have often fished there as family own a house overlooking the lagoon 2 houses up from Riptide .

The Northern end of Southbroom beach is a popular little fishing  bay (BIg Tree ), off the rocks or beach the usual blacktail etc can be caught. In the bay especially at night kob come out . NB Go with a friend.

Next to this bay on the main beach, with the lagoon behind you there is often a rip that takes one bait out further when one casts to the right of the rocks panfish , use small hooks.

The main beach is very slow during the day but gets better at night , Kob come quite close.
Off the tidal pool you can have fun with grandkids caching tiddlers , Beware the concrete wall is slippery.

The Point, below the bench above the parking area, has a reasonable vantage rock for sliding, but I have not seen anything come out.
In the little bay some usual rock and gully dwellers come out , again small hooks and plenty sinkers .

In the Bay next to Grannys Pool there is a small safe parking area and path to the beach .There are rocks protruding seawards on both sides of the beach, watch the current and cast out on the side the current is exiting here again the same panfish  are around.

Shad will be caught in any bay during the cold months

It means a lot, now I know how and where to start 


Should you or anyone else have suggestions to what to fishing tackle and bait to use I would be so happy.


I will try to go after for something like shad to begin with. And would like the hook/bait technique to be as simple as possible. 


Then I will go do some gear shopping tomorrow 


Looking forward like a little child to start fishing here!


I don't know what is best in regards to rods and wheels, but hope the shop will sell me what is best and not just what they have in stock !!

Jacobo I would recommend the Tackle Box as your first stop. Luckys is not bad but can be a bit prone to selling you what they have rather than what actually works.
