Hi guys & girls

Heading down to st Lucia next week. What can I expect? Are there any size shad around? Kob, stumpies! Would also like to try for non edibles!

Any advice would be appreciated

Hi all,

Just came back from a few days at Maphelane. Fishing was very slow and when the northerly blows, all the dirty water from where they working at St Lucia washes into the bay. The bay has become extremely shallow and at low tide we could virtually walk out to the main reef. We prayed for the southerly wind to clean the bay. When the clear water pushed in with the southerly, the water looked amazing but still no fish.

We fished long hours and moved around a lot to find where the fish where but it was very quite. There were a number of people in the Chalets and they all tried their luck. On the Friday they decided to sit around the braai and have a few dops rather than fish which was a wise decision as I caught nothing the whole day.

On Saturday morning I was up at 03h00 and fished about 250 meters north of the point. That was the best fishing time. Landed six nice size stumpies all on filleted red-eye and prawn combo. All successfully released. On my bigger rod I had put a whole redeye inside out on. It literally was taken within 5 minutes but before I could set the hooks, it was off. I think a nice flat fish took the bait. Just what I needed to carry on persevering for another five hours.
We walked to crayfish point and managed to get some nice bugs in deeper water. Threw spoons for up and down while we walked but never got a bump. There were no shad although some of the locals did say that a few shad had been caught the week before.
As always Maphelane will be a special place and have already booked my next trip, but for longer in September.

Some nice catches from St Lucia beach this last few days. The shad arrived and with it some good catches.
A couta of 14 kgs and a GT this morning of about 35 kgs.
Both falling to live shad.
The Gt was safely released.
