Shark Comp Shelly Beach Cancled
« on: September 28, 2010, 06:39:24 PM »
The Shelly Shark comp scheduled for the 2 October Candled what do you think shark comp or not let’s put it to a vote   and chumming for sharks in bin loads on Protea allowed or not by dive charters?

A group of charter boat fishermen had organised a weekend of big-game fishing from October 2 to fish for sharks. At least 60 boats had signed up for the event which would see them launch out of Shelly Beach and make their way to Protea Banks, where they would compete against each other in the shark fishing competition.
The proposed competition caused an outrage from locals, who expressed concern over the “slaughtering” of sharks.
The overwhelming support against the competition has resulted in its cancellation, but this does not mean that the controversy has gone away.
The Protea Banks reef plays a very important role in south coast tourism, with people from all over the world coming to dive with sharks at the world famous location. Many charter boat fishing companies, however, are concerned that the population of sharks in the area has been severely detrimental to the fishing trade.
Stefnie Fabricius, from Riptide Charters, was involved in compiling the list of fishermen who were keen to kill a shark.
“We battle to get people to pay to come out fishing with us because the sharks eat all the fish,” she said.
“We also lose hundreds of lures and lots of tackle to the sharks.”
The initial rules of the competition would have allowed the charter boats to catch, and kill, one shark each. If it had not been a competition, then each fishing license would have allowed the catching of 10 sharks.
After coming under increased scrutiny from the public, the rules of the event began to change.
By Tuesday afternoon, one of the event’s organisers, Johan Albrecht, said he was doing his utmost to try and make the competition a “tag and release”.
This was largely due to the uproar that the proposed competition had provoked from environmentalists. By Wednesday morning, Albrecht confirmed that the competition had been cancelled.
“I never knew that something like this would become so big,” said Albrecht. “A group of the guys who organised it got together and we decided not to go through with it.”
While this decision has calmed the unease for the moment, the problem has not gone away, says Michael Bertram, CEO of Ugu Tourism.
“We are very happy that common sense has prevailed and the competition has been cancelled,” he said. “But there are very valid comments from both sides and there is clearly discussion that needs to happen.” He hopes to facilitate a meeting on the matter in the next few weeks.
Roland Mauz, owner of African Dive Adventures — a company which takes people diving with sharks at Protea Banks — says the fishing out of sharks is totally unacceptable.
“The fishermen are understandably upset, but this doesn’t give them the right to fish out sharks,” he said.
“I have done the calculations and each shark is worth around R100 000 to tourism on the south coast, whereas a dead shark is worthless.
“Our main concern is the environmental impact; we already face the possibility of seeing the extinction of sharks in our lifetime

There is definately substance to the concerns of all parties, however looking at the paragraph above...
It would be nice to be able to have a shark cometition, purely for the "pleasure of the fight", however it should be 100% catch & release. There is no reason to kill the shark or any fish for that matter if the fisherman is not planning to consume it... As for the woman from Riptide Charters... When you go out fishing or in her case taking paying customers out to fish, you are bound to lose lures, sinker, hooks & other tackle...It's called running a business. There will always be losses... When you enter the ocean, you bet the taxman (sharks) will take their bit. "Give some get some"... It's all about the experience anyway.
I've gone deepsea fishing all around the world & sometimes you go out there & you come back with nothing... I still enjoy the experience of it...

Touchy subject this one, I'm on the fence.

I think its something for the conservation guys to look at. Some say the shark numbers are under threat due to these crazy long liners pulling them out like mackerel. Then you have anglers complaing that there are more sharks around than edibles.

I retrieve this from the Shelly Beach ski boat club facebook profile.

"The only way to restore the balance is to put a total ban on fishing on Protea for minimum 2 years, this will be very hard on the guys who make a living out of fishing but while they continue to plunder the reef on a daily basis throwing tons of sardines over board, then the sharks will continue to wait for their easy supper. We must train the sharks to work for a living again, killing them in one or two competitions is not going to sort the problem in the long term."

Sad as it is I think we have contributed to the situation on protea. The method of fishing there does attract sharks and they have learnt to hone in on the ski boats there as an easy source of food. In my experience the sharks will actually follow your boat knowing an easy meal is on its way. This false abundance of food creates a situation where the population goes into overdrive for a number of reasons:
1)The sharks are able to breed more due to the ease of finding food (Not to sure about this sharks may have a set reproduction rate)
2) The juveniles dont die off due to an easy source of food
3) Juveniles dont get eaten as much since there is so much easy food for the big guys.

I think anyone who has fished protea for an extended period knows just how bad the sharks can be. The other issue is the average size of the tuna there. Nowdays anything over 10kg is a good fish and anything over 20kg is really impressive this I think is caused by the fact that the sharks are chomping a lot of the big tuna during the fights due to there abundance and the fact that they have become so accustomed to this "free meal". The other issue is that I reckon protea must have one of the biggest fleets of charters for the size of that reef this leads to many novice anglers havinbg extended fights with big fish leading to them getting chomped by the tax man.

I think its clear to everyone who has fished there that something must be done about the situation but I dont think removing a hundred or so sharks over a few days is the answer. Just as removing sharks from the inshore zone with gill nets is not the answer to shark attacks
