Help needed on Giants Castle area

Good morning everyone


I need a bit of help as this is the first time I'm going trout fishing. We are going to Champagne Sports resort in mid Sept. so I was thinking of going fishing in the Giants Castle reserve on the Bushmans river.


What I would like to know is, is this a good spot and are there any other nearby spots you could recommend me trying, and how does it work, can I fish on any part of the river inside the reserve? and then any recommendations on fly selection that a beginner like me could use to catch one of those beautiful browns or rainbows? 


Oh and type of leader material eg. tapered, poundage ....

Hi Heinrich, lucky you, my favourite stream the Bushmans, from a fishing perspective you can fish in the reserve, just buy a permit from reception, we normally fish from the gate to cascade pools, should take you couple of hours. Before you enter Giants Castle nature reserve you will see private waters that belong to the hatchery, you can fish that water if no one is staying at their accomadation. Speak to the owners first before you fish they will charge you to fish. There is also tribal waters before the hatchery as you drive to the nature reserve but i've never fished it before.
September might be tricky if the rains dont come so be prepaired. a 3 weight rod and floating line will do, tippet wise fish the lightest you can, 5x - 7x will do, flies that i'd reccomend Dry - RAB's , Parachute Adams , CDC & Elk and hoppers. Nymph - small GHRE and Zaks.

Thanks very much for the info Papparoach, much appreciated, tell me do you park your vehicle at the gate and walk from there or do you stop along the road.  Are there any still water dams in that area that you know off where one could fish?
