Zig Zag when trolling

When I have to troll into or with a swell I prefer to zig zag and go along the swell, I also find that when turning the change in the lure speeeds often induces a strike.

How do you guys like to troll, in a staright line, or a zig zag along a ledge or contour etc.

I just stick to the contours!

It does depend on conditions, but generally I work the contour shallow to deep and back. or fig 8 around a structure. and always along the swell.

yip shallow to deep and back. But its a bit of a wide open question as there are so many variants,

I guess it also depends on the skipper, some guys are not called Captain Zig Zag for nothing

Well we here in Luanda don't actually zig zag, we try stick to contours but with all the visual surface inputs you get our boats actually do some detour from contours.

Explaining it, water changes and debris when we see them we make a detour from the initial planned route and follow them, surface activity also sometimes even go back and do some circles around it..
On water "changes" we try to follow the line but usually stay on the "clean" side of the water frontier.

On inshore trollin,g that is structure oriented we stick to the structure contours and sometimes induce some speed changes over the structure to try induce strikes.

When trawling for Natal Snoek and they are feeding very sly and there hardly any other boat around,  then I start doing the zig zag trawling to get some rapid movement on the fillet baits works like a charm.

That was the Captain Zig Zag I was talking about. Better than any autopilot, automatically runs a zig zag pattern!

Well thats pretty much what I do!

I don't focus on the GPS unless aiming for a target or reef. I'll stick the boat into and approximate direction and check/correct every now and then!
