Fished Strome on Sunday with Schlossie and young Frederick.
Frederick got his first ever 2 hookups on the Vaal on his 4th trip :happ: :happ:

Still needs to get them in the net, but that will happen soon. w;k

I managed a yellow and around 4 or so muddies. Nothing worth taking a pic of, the yellow was more silver than yellow.
I know Andrew got at least 1 yellow and quite a few muddies.

I had my share of Vaal Shuffles,   , I think 3 in all  :dunno:

Maybe the Birthday Windhoek Breakfast at 05:00 had something to do with it  :craz:
If we caught fish on every trip, it would be called " Catching". We don't, and that's why it's called "Fishing".

Fished at the Parys Country Estate on Saturday morning. Not the biggest piece of river on the Vaal system but away from the crowds. We fished the area behind the 17th fairway which is basically 4 pools joined by a couple of rapids.

The mermaids ( catfish ) were very active early on and I saw some sizer fish in the 10kg plus range. The fish seemed too be hungry as I went vas with the first cast of the day landing a little Silver. I had 4 on/off in quick succession after that before landing a young Yellow, which marked the start of a very unproductive 2 hours of fishing.

Moving on to last of the 4 pools and I went vas on what initially felt like another young fish. When all hell broke loose on the water. The reel started screaming like a cat in labour and I had to hold for all I’m worth. Sizer Mermaid was going through my mind. The fight lasted for a good couple of minutes before I managed to land my first Carp on Fly

Well done!
Just a word of caution. The Vaalriver's water is very very sif - try not to hold your rod in your mouth or let the water come near your mouth. The water on your rod is enough to give you gyppo's for a week!

My Xmas present, a custom net by Mario Geldenhyus, arrived yesterday so this morning I had a quick 2 hour session on the Vaal. I am happy to say that the net has been christened with 5 smallmouth, including my biggest of the season.
The big fish in the pic has a fork length of 47cm so that gives an idea of how big the net is.
Mario's craftsmanship is brilliant and I am very happy with the net. The longer reach and bigger bag makes netting the fish a lot easier.

All my fish this morning were caught on a #16 GHRE variation.
