Fishing in the desert
« on: September 28, 2013, 07:30:48 PM »
So finally after almost a month in country I had my wheels on Wednesday afternoon.

Thursday evening just confirm the arrangements and Friday morning 4:00 saw me on the Saudi Kuwait high way towards Jubail.

Finally after driving 80 odd km's found the gate at the compound and met up with Anthony. (South African working the last 6 years here in Saudi and also a passionate angler)

We were on the rocks with deep water around us at 5:15 as the sun was coming up.

I loaded the 10ft Adrenaline with the 6000 Sustain and  3OZ GT Ice cream...

On the 3rd cast i got hit and after a lekker figth had a 3kg barra on the rocks.

That broke the ice and set things for the rest of the morning.

I was amazed at how the barra's teeth destroyed most of the material on the stinger.

I changed to another plug same shape and size and started working the water.

The rod combo was putting the plug close or over a 100m so i could cover a good bit of water.

Maybe 45min later I made a cast straight into the rising sun. The plug landed and two turns of the handle I got hit.

Only when I had the fish close to the rock could I see a number plate and got me excited to see the familiar queen fish shape. I saw some video clips of queen fish coming out here from the rocks and hoped I could connect with one.

All smiles...

The old kitchen scale later said this one was 8#

After a photo or 10 and a water and cool drink it was back on the rocks but with a custom 10ft rod that needed testing.

I had a bunch of amazing chases and bumps on the plug where the fish kicked up a lot of spray and chased the plug a long way but did not connect.

A bit later I was vas again and this time the queeny performed better than a lot of trout giving me a lot of air time. The difference is that now I had a fish on that was easily over 1m long. After a good solid fight the fish was on the rocks.

The angle of the fish in the photo suck (need to practice it a bit) but you will get the idea...

The kitchen scale later said she was 15# but I honestly believe she was a bit heavier

I will have a measuring tape with me next time.

A while later I got stuck in another of the same size queeny that also jumped and fought hard but the hook pulled as she jumped close to the rocks.

A bit of a long line release but stoked on the into into Saudi fishing.

Next week Friday will find me again on the rocks before 5:00

Thanks guys.

I migh encounter Cuta from the rocks as well.

What lure would you suggest for cuta with queen fish also taking the lure?

Also a surface plug?

Or maybe a bucktail jig?

Bare in mind I dont have a big veriaty of lures with me or access to..

That surface take on those flat waters must be awesome to see. Well done on some great queenies, for the couta try some old school white metal spoons even small stick baits.
