Spinning along False Bay
« on: February 27, 2013, 10:39:21 AM »
Hey guys,

Do you think it's worth while spinning for kob along the false   bay coast? I know it's very active in KZN but don't see anyone doing it along   the false bay coast.  :dunno:

Theres some real potencial , and A few years back I did get a few fish on lure
[size=78%]s in Falsbay / MAccasar to Strandfontein .[/size]

i have taken loads of kobs on lures in struis too from die plaat , and further up the coast as the guys who taught me was from PE side .

big  cd rapalas [with the plastic lip]
Havocs [my personal fav] locally made in PE.
the latest are clone lures also llocally made , the guys have been doing realllly well with them up in EP .

The best advice I can give you is to , work your lure slowly on the bottom . theres various threads that can give you info ect [have a look at some of tommo's posts]

many guys give up as they dont know how the fish will bite , in a perfect world the kob grabs your lure and runs of , this does happen but not everyday , They like to mouth your lure , this will feel like you hooked a bag [the plastic kind not the fish ] you have to be very very awake when fishing for them , you can on most days outfish the guys with bait and livebaits, you can also work an area , thus searching for areas where fish holds beter , once you have found a hole /drop/gutter . look for similar areas , or just shift around , you will get a bite .

you have to understand the lure , and where does the kob wait for food. Kob area lazy they dont burn too much energy/food on looking for it , they wait in areas where the baitfish and your lure will be exposed to ambush .

the best advice i can give you , for fishings plastics like paddletails is to get a 10 to 12 foot light spinning rod 15 to 25 lbs fireline . and some 2 ounce leadheads some paddletails mcarty or sensation also have a nice one .you will easily be able to fish the whole day , with such s light outfit , but pack light and leave the bait at home , focus on th lure fishing , as your attension will be split up with baitrods , you have to keep an eye on .
If you a strong swimmer , you will be able to safely get on shallows banks far out , but plan beforehand what the tides do...
Lures are great fun for kob .

Thanks for this great advice Lenny!  :udman:
you said you got a few years back, do you not do it anymore?
I definately plan to you the info you have given me.  What sort of distance can one get when throwing a 2oz lure?  I have to learn to slow down my retrieve to allow the lure to sink, i tend to reel it in kinda fast as i think the lure will get hooked on something when too close to the bottom.
is it necessary to have to long casting reel when spinning from the sure?

Distance , is something you will have to pair up with the tackle you want to use , and the lure weights , lipped lures will in  most cases have to be weighed down with weighted trebles .

clones really fly even in the wind [you get them on the shelf from 1 to 3 ounce ]  if you pair it up with a 11' or 10 ' rod and 20lbs braid , you will atleast get 80m cast  guestimate. To put my guestimate
I have fished the 2 oz Clones/spoons and plastics/plugs   of a boat , with a 9' rod and 20lbs braid and easily get 50 to maybe 60 meter casts on average.

when tackling up , you must figure out , what you want to do , i mean altough lipped lures and spinning/grinders work , its not ideal , small multipliers , will not be ideal when fishing paddle tails /plastics .
If you looking to spend money , a 10 foot grinder and good reel is a good buy , and you will be able to scratch with bait in the off season, its also lighter , transport ect .
If you ask me , I would try the strand reefs with plastics and bucktails [beter tag along with someone that knows the reefs , oumansgat , shark rock ect ] Maccasar down to strandfontein i would throw lipped lures to , along with plasticts and clones .

have to go now  CRICKET !!!!
Sure theres some other guys with some more info?
