Okuma Solterra
« on: June 30, 2011, 09:43:00 AM »
Hi All,

Does anybody own a reel like this, have any experience and or comments on this reel...

Also, anybody owns or fished with the Okuma Makeira reels?

Thanks

MM I was trying to sell some here at a stage http://www.ultimateangling.co.za/index.php/topic,1016.msg6375.html#msg6375

They were won in a competition and not used much. I donated them to comps on UA. John F I think has a Solterra 50 at the moment that he won in one of the comps.

The short use I had from them I would have to say that the drag increased incrementally so two clicks up from halfway and you could be on full lock. Something I preferred not to use. Also found that the line can go in between the spool and the cradel of the reel. Personally would not buy Solterra.

I have two TITUS gold 50's and have no complaints as of yet. I would reckon the Makaira probably one of the top reels however very few actually own any to give one a report on them.

Yeah that's the one Tunaman... I'm not sure it's a solterra or T50II... Will have to check as soon as I get out of this #@*# waiting room!!!

So far I've never had a proper fish (+10 kg) on that reel so can't really give an opinion...

The T50 is an excellent value for money IMO!

Thanks Tunaman and John F,

Another question: Do u guys think the Makeira and or Titus reels will be able to withstand the "harshnes" of jetski fishing ie getting wet the whole time...

Thanks.

Tunaman is right... the reel I've got is a Solterra 50...

No sure how much you'll b paying for the Okuma but the TLDs are pretty sturdy and popular... and not very expensive... I would say use them for the ski instead ....

MM what pricing have you received on the Makeira? It would give a better indication of what you can look at.

MM not sure if you will get anything worthwhile for that price. Makeira's I'm sure will go for similar pricing as tiagra's. The Tyrnos is a good reel but will be difficult to get 2nd hand ones. If you get a Titus Gold for that price take it.

Sorry Tunaman, Only saw after my post you are referring to the makeira reels....

The first price is for the solterra's....

The last time I have checked I could get TLD's (not the new gold ones, the back ones...) anything from R950 - R1250 for the 15 -25...

I don't really know the prices of the titus or makeira... Anybody that can help?

It is for my 30lbs rigs so maybe I must just get the TLD's....

At R750-R850 per reel (Solterra) I assume these are the 30s?!

Also all prices are for new reels?!

If everything else fails, TLDs are workhorses and don't think parts/service would be a problem.... not sure about the Okumas?

I won the 30 and havent had a chance to use it yet but it feels fine it is the first lever drag ive owned so dont have anything to compair it to...
one thing i noticed though is that the tighter the drag the harder it is to turn the handle...

I never owned a lever drag before, but is it normal for the handle to tighten with the drag lever? I can't recall experiencing that fishing with my friend's tld's of his boat...
Also, is it worth my while to upgrade from a star drag to a lever drag on the jetski? I have read somewhere that lever drag reels are better as you can "close" the lever drag (put it on full) when you move to your / another spot, and that this prevents the water from entering the reel / drag... What do u guys think?

For a Jetski??? You want to target Marlin on your ski???

I think all those reels are too big, heavy and cumbersome for a jetski. 30Lb tackle... TLD 25 is ideal although I've been told something like the SL50SH star drag reels are better because they are better sealed!

I would not be using anything heavy like those off a Jetski!

:billf: off a jetski... Hell yeah.... Just need to sort out my fighting chair!!!  :hehe:

I want to use it on my 30 lbs tackle, so it will most probably be size 15 -25 leverdrag reel.  The okuma LD reels sizes and specs are quite similar to shimano tld reels.

I currently use the Daiwas SL50's on my 30lbs rig of the jetski.  I have no problem with them, I am just investigating the option of "upgrading" to lever drag...

I just have no experience with okuma reels, but so many tackle shops "recommend' them and that was actually the reaon for my post, to get feedback on quality etc of these reels...

Bottom line is that you can get these "entry" level leverdrag okuma reels (not the titus gold etc) about R500 - R700 cheaper than a similar size TLD, obviously depending on where you shop...

If I save R1000 on two reels Ic an spend it at Demon Tackle....  w;k

Just remember, they may be cheaper and even shiny, but they will never be a Shimano! ;-)
