Ferry Point at Port St Johns
« on: November 29, 2010, 08:26:24 AM »
Our Annual Competition was Held at Ferry Point in the Transkei this Weekend. Everything was fully paid for before we arrived.
On arrival we are greeted by the manager (Nerville) who informs he has resigned. I then ask where Matthew the owner is. He is gone to town.
Get taken to Cottage 16...Workers are busy painting. The stove does not work. We get to Cottage 15 and it looks a dirt bin.
A quick brainstorm and we need to sort things out ourselves. The freezer is not working. So we get the RESIGNED manager to show us the freezers in the other cottages. We find a working one filled to the top with at least 10 cob all between 90cm to 120cm. We offload all the fish onto a table and carry the freezer to one our cottages.
The owner now arrives. His wife gets out of the van but  he does not get out. His wife gets out with a few duvets in her hand. She is so intoxicated that she can barely stand. Matthew just sits in the van.
He cannot even stand. He has absolutely no idea of anything. We must leave everything to him and he will sort it out. His wife then takes charge and proceeds to offer their home to us. She is virtually falling over self. We get to their place and it 100 times worse than any of the cottages. The two maids then take over as both the owners head for their beds and pass out. We agree to pay the maids something extra if they can move some mattresses, stoves and bedding around.
We try to make ourselves as comfortable as possible. As fishermen we get used to rustic accommodation but this went beyond rustic. A few hours later the Parks Board arrives with the cops and confiscates the entire cob stock. They cannot find the owner. The staff later informs us that he was hiding under the bed. The entire weekend is filled with toilets not working; water pipes breaking, Broken windows, no door locks and drunk male staff members.  The one freezer that we stored bonnies in only worked as a fridge and we lost a large amount of bait. There is no cleaning of rooms. There was only one kettle for 19 guys. After complaining we eventually get another one.
The lesson learnt is that do not believe on internet pictures. Even if someone paid me we would never ever vist Ferry Point again.
