JHB TO PONTA VIA SWAZI??
« on: November 11, 2010, 09:15:16 PM »
Hey guys,

with all the nightmarish roadworks on the piet retief road is it worth while traveling through swazi with a big rig to Ponta do Ouro? and what is the route from Jozi?

last time I went through Swazi - the roads were absolutely fine. Would you come out at Pongola and through Kosi to Ponta? That would be easier than through Namaacha border post (or the one just below) - I am not sure what the road is like inside Moz from those border posts to Ponta, but I would imagine not great

Yip I think it would be better to come out at pongola then through Kosi, you know the route?

the route through Kosi is fairly obvious - just a track really - splits all sorts of directions but eventually gets you to Ponta - but 4x4 required, (although some have done it without). Assume that if you are towing it may be a bit more difficult, but manageable. Whatever - its not far at all. I think it would be easier than coming through Moz - becasue all tar to the border from pongola

See route from map source attached -

Thanks ziggy, I know the route from kosi. But looking at the map this is the normal route on the n2 via piet retief etc and the road is a mare, I believe ther is a road that cuts all of that out and comes out on the JOzini side??

Greg, the road from Jozi to Pongola is terrible with all the road works.
Then you go past Pongola and take the Jozini turn off and drive to Kosi on a road that has potholes the size of you car and boat together. I drive these roads a lot.

My advice is is to come down the N3, go past Durbs and at Hluluwe take the turn off to Kosi and then to Ponta.
This is more km's but less time on the road and the roads are good exept the last few km's to the Ponta border.

Shag, which lodge are you going to?

I'm looking for a place for April '11 and don't want to drive all the way up to Zavora and those places.

Cheers!
