Reaming a yellowfin tuna
« on: March 03, 2024, 10:15:33 AM »
Does a yellowfin tuna die immediately after it has been "reamed" wire pushed down its spine. Or is it just paralyzed?
We fish responsibly and release when we have enough for a few days. We do not sell fish as its against the law in South Africa.

Gaff it, bleed it, (spike it) ream it (also known as Taniguchi method)
Some spike first - others go straight to ream.

The recommended process for export fish from warm water is to gaff, spike, ream then bleed. For our area, gaff, bleed, spike, ream.
If you haven't killed it with the spike, then the reaming will kill the fish.
