Fisherman Newbie

Good day Folks.

This will be my real post apart from my welcome post around a week ago.

I am new to fishing and am located in Hermanus.
Today I decided to go fishing between Vermont and Hawston, and found a large inlet/bay.





My gear was a 14ft Elbe SeaDemon Rod with a Dip 7000 
After a few casts just in front of where the kelp starts. My bait I used was White Mussel, and all I managed to catch was the below little guys. (It was probably not the best idea to fish while tide was going out)




I would love for the more experienced anglers to assist me with a few questions that was going through my head while fishing.

1. Is this a decent 'spot' .
2. Am I using the right bait.
3. What fish should I be exected to be targeting in a spot like that
4. Should I be casting  in the kelp or does it not matter?

In the end it was a great to be alone and relaxing with a rod in my hand and for a bonus I found some red bait near where I was fishing :) so took that home :)

  hoodlum. Those are Klipvissies, many different types. Walkerskiller is the Klipvis king. I'm clueless when it comes to Cape fishing, but it seems to me that you're fishing too heavy for your spot. Looking at the pic, Seems like a light tackle spot with 9 or 10 ft rod, with a small grinder with 20lb braid...? What are you using?

I use a 14ft Elbe Rod with a Dip 7000 Grinder. My line is a 13.5kg Mono

The Hermanus area are a tough and not such a well  known productive area .


You should try to make some missions to franskraal , pearly beach and die damme.

You will mostly catch klipvis and skaamhaai there, the water is too calm for most shore species like Galjoen or Kolstert which prefer white, working water.
You should't be looking for calm, deep water, but rather for working, shallow water.
You can catch galjoen from Onrus beach, just around the corner. Focus on the areas close to the rocks on either side of the swimming beach.


If you don't feel ready to target shore species mentioned, head over to the new harbor, there is almost always some of the following to catch:
mullet, maasbanker, karel grootoog, the odd hottentot, gurnard (haven't seen one in a while), skaamhaai, butterfish to catch.

Baits of choice in harbor would be pilchard/ white mussel.


For shore fishing use that redbait you picked up!


Spots where the working water occurs don't usually have too much kelp, and casting directly into kelp will cost you a lot of money due to traces lost, and a lot of heartache due to fish lost.
