What new rod for a KP?
« on: September 08, 2010, 01:41:05 PM »
Hi guys,

I am about to buy a new KP deluxe, probably 6 to 7 inch. I hear you now even get one with a brake!

Anyway, can anyone suggest a rod to pair with this? My scarb rods are all old glass rods, but not sure if I will still find something similar. It needs to be fairly long (8ft minimum), and willowy. Will be used for bait, whipping and some trawling, possibly light jigging.

Any suggestions?

You got a long wish list there nico.
I would look at one of the kigfisher rods (depends what you wan tto spend of course).
I would guess something like the cuda or dorado ski. always like the king fisher rods. I dont think purglas make the tiger specials anymore, but they are the bomb.
I dont do whipping (maybe some spanking, but no whipping) and for jigging get a jigging rod. the kingfisher rods would work well for trolling as well i recon.

Look, its going to be a whipping and bait rod primarily. You know Campy at Hemmingways right? Have you seen the ambers he's caught on his kp and glas rod? Can be done, and has to be given a shot  :sml:

Ja, seen them. I still recon 1 of the kingfisher rods then. probably the cuda ski.
the kp with a drag still has me confused. how do you cast or let down with it as it has no clutch i can see. also has to reverse 1/4 turn before it engages, enough to smack a knuckle.

Nico, try get something a little longer than you have now. That way you can stand on one side of the boat and fish on the other.

Haha! Bennie doesn't like when I show up on his boat with my 11inch. Or my long rod (both of these before mentioned being fishing tackle).

CM and Shag, I'll have a look around at the shops here for a Zulu ski.

I havent actually seen it, so no idea how it works. Might pop into a shop and have a look. Is it a lock or a drag?

You get a totally different action with the KP whipping action, still stays the best.

Nico, I also use the 9ft Couta ski rods on my whipping sticks with 7" KP's, and they work a charm. Nice whipping action and slow and slap...if you know what I mean

I know exactly what you mean! And it is just fun, a bit medieval. And when you have a fish on, with the reel screaming on your palm... gotta love it!

Every time I show up at Bennie's with a long rod he b1tches about my "rock and surf tackle" that doesn't fit in the gunnel - haha!

It's not the reel that's screaming! It's you because you forgot your Michael Jackson glove!

Have you looked at the Geelbek ski??? Nice rods!

Bennie, you just need a longer boat to accomodate his longer rods.

The geelbek ski's are the kingfisher ones right? nice, but I recon a bit heavy for whipping, hence the cuda ski suggestion.

We have one old rod Think it was a ski mapelane. lovely old rod. Not sure if they make them anymore. that thing would be ideal for whipping, nice and long and nice action. Think it may have been a KF, but cant see the logo anymore.

My bottom rod is a Natal Ski, but it is pretty heavy, so I am assuming here that the Zulu ski is lighter. My whipping rod is a foot longer (yes Bennie!), much thinner and lighter. One of those beautiful old brown glass rods - no branding or anything. I want another one exactly like that!

nico, sounds like your whipping rod is just like the one I mentioned. Beautiful brown colour. very nice rods, and as I said was called a ski mapelane. I will ask kirk if he knows whether it was a KF or not as he inherited it from my late grandfather.
