Fly Fishing Help
« on: June 26, 2012, 03:05:37 PM »
hey guys and Guru's!!!

Been out fly fishing in my break at the harbour.....i think im getting the hang of things but i must say i have a long way to go. My biggest problem i think is my line...its a floating a line and it really doesnt cast that well especially since im out saltwater fly fishing too. I know i need intermediate or sinking line...........i wont be hitting surf so i think that intermediate line would be better so i can fish at the bay and in Umgeni River too. Unfortunately for me i have 5 to 6 wt fly rod matched with a reel. Some would argue that i need a 10 or even 12wt rod but i think the one i have will suffice.  Is there anyone willing to swop the floating line with intermediate line with me? theres only so much that having a longer leader can make my fly sink lol or am i missing some points here?

You will be able to catch with a floating line. DO NOT GET RID OF IT. You will need a floating line at some stage. Rather save up and buy a decent Intermediate line or  a Di2/3 line.

The trick is in finding the fish and what they are feeding on.

Good luck
Frederick

I know this is an old post, however I would agree with FC here, you can get cheapish reels or just another spool for yours and ad some intermediate line to it. I prefer it to sinking, as it sinks just very slowly so you can control the depth better with it, or that is just my thinking...
There’s more to life than fishing – a significant small bit that I haven’t figured out yet….

DI 3 WF line and an Intermediate line are best for Durban Harbour, 6wt is perfect.
Floating line is OK, but I prefer an intermediate even for poppers.

Come have a chat with me at my boat, will give you some good pointers and spots
