Dacron vs Swivels on GT Ice Creams

Hi Everyone


i have used my GT Ice Creams and the dacron has started to fray. I have tried to go online to find a way to put new hooks and dacron on my lures. I have not found any joy in my endeavour. 


I looked at the knots on a new GT Ice Cream to see if I can do it, but I prefer to have more information before I do this. What are the knots on the hook and the tail end of lure? Looks like a snell on the hook but I have no idea on the knot on the lures tail.


I am even considering using split rings and swivels. Is this a solution or should I use dacron? I would like to have your opinions and advise on this matter?


If some one knows how to setup your lure with dacron I would really appreciate your help. What are the lengths (percentage of lures length) of the dacron form the hook to the lure.

To make a single strand of Dacron for a Stinger hook is quite a lot more complicated, though much stronger and more satisfying...

It explains how to splice a double Dacron into a single piece. Remember to put it through the lure attachment before making the loop!!

So the way they do the GT Ice creams is to thread the lure attachment first with the loop and then pull it tight, as I explain in the Stinger thread. Then they splice the 2 Dacron ends together to make 1 piece (as explained in the Second thread), which you then tie to the hook with the 2 Half hitches, as explained in the Stinger thread.

Sorry guys, my understanding of the term "dacron" is not what you guys are showing here. That is nothing but nylon cord/string. If you want it also known as blind cord, as in the cord used to pull up blinds. Most fabric shops stock these and you can buy it by the meter.

That is Dacron (capital D). A patented weave of coated fibres produced by DuPont. The coating and braiding are what separates it from other polyester based materials. It is impervious to water and has an accurate breaking strain hence it can (and used to be) the line of choice for big game record angling.


OP, I often fish in an area with sharp tooth predators and have moved to a split ring to swivel to split ring to hook set up. No noticeable difference in hook ups and I spend less time re-rigging.

Let me begin


The hardest part of this doing this was finding the Loop Needle. The local tackle shops do not have or cant get stock of the needle. Anyway, I went to a sewing shop and got a upholstery needle and it works like a dream. I paid R7.20 for a pair. The needles come in all thicknesses and lengths.


Here is what I did:

• cut the length of the Dacron I needed and bent it in half
• spliced the Dacron with the needle just below the top of the loop and started to thread the needle through the hollow core of the Dacron
• feed the needle through till I got to the end of the needle where the hole is. I then inserted the other end of the Dacron into the loop of the needle and started to pull the tag end through the hollow core. (take it easy and assist the tag end through the core)
• Once the tag end has come through the core you will be left with a nice loop on your Dacron. Make the loop any size you want.
• you will see that the Dacron tag ends frail when you are working the needle through the core. Once the tag is through cut you desired length and use a lighter to burn the ends
• I attached the Dacron to the lure using a Chinese cuff
• Tied a snell knot on the hook. I took some braid and wrapped the tag end of the Dacron so it would not stick out and then put some superglue on the braid to seal the knot.

All in all I am happy with the outcome so now its time to put it to use.
