QUESTION ABOUT BRAID FOR MY ROD.
« on: February 14, 2022, 10:41:42 AM »
Hi Guys

So you guys know I started lure fishing.
First outing didn't go to well, and I want to change the 15 lb. braid on my reel.

I recently found some night glow 3" paddle tails.
When I arrive home in Scottburgh during the week, I am usually home by 6.30 pm to 7 pm.
Due to the heat, I sometimes take the family to Rocky bay which is about +- 12 mins away from home.
There is a small pier there which I would like to throw this lure from for about an hour or so.
The below is my question.
My rod the Sensation Purple Stick, its a great rod, light and has a good action.
It is rated 8 to 17gr.
If I am using jig heads not exceeding 1/4 oz., but and also using more lighter jig heads (I did not see the weights), What lb. braid would best suit this rod?, note size 3000/4000 reel.

Reason being, I want to try and match the rod rating to the suitable lb. braid.
I am not sure about the average distance of what the other guys are getting on 7ft setups.
Also if one can note the lb. of fluorocarbon leader to attached to the braid, it will also help.

or if you have any advice for me, please feel free to share.

Any good braid from 6 to 10lb will be perfect. Personally I use 15lb braid, but I sometimes cast heavier lures, up to 1oz.

No expert, but below are the three spinning setups I carry. Sometimes I leave the light setup, sometimes I leave the heavy one. Maybe it helps:

Light Setup - Casting 2-8G
7ft rod rated for 3-21 grams (still shopping for a lighter rod hard to find light 7ft rods on a budget)
Okuma Ceymar C30 reel (smaller or equivalent to most 2000 series reels)
10Lb 3x Boss Finesse braid (still on the fence with this one. Casts well, but due to the 3x braid its flat, so you notice line twist more)
14Lb (0.3mm) Fluorocarbon leader

Medium Light Setup - Casting 3.5-15+g
7ft rated for 3-21g
Daiwa Prorex X 2500 reel
14Lb 4x Boss Power Pro (swopping to 8x slick when this wears out)
14Lb (0.3mm) Fluorocarbon leader

Medium Setup - Casting 14-35g
7ft6 or 9ft rod rated for 7-42 grams (depending on whether I am in an estuary or on the rocks
Daiwa BG3000 (slightly larger than a 4000 series reel)
20Lb 8x Boss Slick Braid
30Lb (0.5mm) Fluorocarbon leader in estuaries, or sometimes 60Lb on the rocks and depending on what I'm targeting.
