New model Shimano Aerocast vs the old model
« on: August 06, 2015, 05:14:59 PM »
I am looking at getting 3 piece travel rods for possible trips targetting the magnificent fresh water species of South America; Golden Dorado , Peacock Bass, Payara.

I see from the Shimano site that the new Aerocast Rods are said to be lighter and stronger than the older model.

Here is what they say below.

"The Shimano Aerocast Spinning Rods are produced in a large range of lengths and casting weights. Shimano has in fact remodeled its Aerocast range with these new and exciting AX models. The new range is made with HPC (high-pressure carbon), making it up to 40% stronger and more responsive. The grip has been changed from cork to a very ergonomic EVA grip but has retained top features such as the Fossil Wood reel seat and Fuji guides. These unique rods are produced with an oval cross section. This special construction gives the rods a stiff side and a soft side. When you cast, the rod is fast and deliver outstanding precision and distance. When you hook a big fish simply turn the rod on its side and the action magically change from fast into parabolic playing action to ensure you land the largest of fish. These rods have beautiful minimalist cosmetics and use Fuji guides and fossil wood reel seat. The cork handle is made by the famous durable Power Cork."

I am interested in the 8ft 2.40 XH model. The new AX model has a lure rating of 40 to 80 grams whereas the older model with the cork grip was rated to a optimal lure weight of 120g and a maximum lure rating of 150g.

The new model is said to be stronger but strangely has a lower lure rating than the older model.

So I would be interested to know from those that have used both rods how do they compare, especially around casting weight.

I've fished extensively with both rods and they are both great. The older model was pretty fragile we had quite a few breakages come back to the shop though admittedly mostly due to anglers inexperience. I've fished my cork grip to hell and back over the last 5 years without any drama. The older version like mine has been off the market for about two years now I think so getting replacement pieces is no longer possible. Buy the new one and fish it without fear is my advice.
